A group of Indians and three Nepalese were arrested from a lodge in Colombo this evening for staying in the country illegally. The 28 Indians and 3 Nepalese had paid 150, 000 Indian Rupees each for the trip to Sri Lanka, the Colombo Police Central Intelligence Crimes unit told Daily Mirror online.
I.P Nishanthna Jayawardena of the Crimes unit said that the foreigners aged between 21 and 35 years old, were residing at a lodge located in Pettah and had come to Sri Lanka after they had been given an assurance by an agent in India that they could proceed to Dubai from Sri Lanka to seek employment.
The Colombo Police Central Intelligence Crimes unit said that the foreigners will be produced in court tomorrow. (Daily Mirror online)

It is very easy to get a Sri Lankan passport for Indians without any documents. There are touts who arrange a passport for less than Rs.40,000. With that many Indians have fled to so many countries. As a consequence, our name is tarnished for illegal immigration.

This is a question of illegal immigrants in SL. These issues are common when a country starts to develop. It is a known facts that large number of South Asian immigrants are now working in Sri Lanka. You may identify them as hotel waiters in Pettah area, Shop workers in Sea Street (Hetti Widiya) and etc. If you wait few hours in the airport, you may see people who could not even read their boarding passes are waiting in group wise. My friends this is the story of unskilled workers who search for greener pastures. We can see thousands of SL people in this place in Italy, Korea, Japan...

Another side of the story is white-collar illegal immigrants. Lot of foreign managers, accountants, Doctors, architectures, lectures, and software engineers... land in SL under on arrival visa as tourists. In fact, they end up working few weeks in their subsidiary companies. Of course, without work visa.

I agree. However, we don't need any help in tarnishing our name as we can manage that quite well by ourselves.

All these guys got duped by the touts in India with promises of landing jobs in Dubai... Wish the Indian and Sri Lankan governments can close these loopholes and save thousands of poor people from this misery. They sell their land, belongings and lose everything..

They are, very likely, on their way to Australia. Colombo must just be a transient point. Once they pay the 'people-smugglers' they will be on their way to Australia, by boat.

Not only Indians, How many Maldivians over staying in Sri Lanlka. Some Maldivians are permanently living in Sri lanka without paying any tax . Schooling their children, working and doing business. But Can Sri Lankans do those things in Maldives ? Next problem in Sri Lanka is with Tamils but With Maldivians.

Sri Lanka is now a prosperous nation ( ! ) it attracts sneaking immigrants from neighbouring nations. Of course, boat people to the developed nations on transit may use Sri Lanka as a safe destination as Sri Lanka is friendly with all most all blocs and a peaceful non-aligned nation. Those who want to go to both the divide East and West may use Sri Lankan route. The passport selling or fixing another one's photo all done by greedy agents despite new screening methods geometric etc.,
