Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara's fighting knock of 133 went in vain as Sri Lanka lost their first one-day international against India by 21 runs to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota, Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Chasing 315-run target, Sri Lankan innings ended up at the score of 293 for 9 after the end of stipulated 50 overs.

Paceman Umesh Yadav finally got rid of former skipper Kumar Sangakkara when he was cleaned up at the score of 133. Sangakkara slammed 12 boundaries during his fine knock.

Kumar Sangakkara held the one end for Sri Lanka as he scored his 14th ODI century in the process but could not finish off the proceedings in Lanka's favour. Sangakkara scored his century in 125 balls with the help of nine fours.

Irfan Pathan dismissed Thisara Perera, who played a fine cameo of 28-ball 44 that included three fours, towards the closing stages.

Zaheer Khan scalped Angelo Mathews to take his first wicket of the innings that increased Sri Lanka's worry of chasing down the huge target.

Earlier, Pragyan Ojha piled more misery on Sri Lankan chase as he scalped Mahela Jayawardene to reduce the island nation to 132/4 in 28.3 overs. Indian pacer Umesh Yadav struck to dismiss Dinesh Chandimal as Sri Lanka struggled against India.

Sangakkara slammed his 73rd ODI fifty to keep Sri Lanka in hunt. The former skipper hit five boundaries in his knock.

India's Ravichandran Ashwin broke the second wicket 77-run stand between Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara by removing the former in the first ODI of the five-match series against Sri Lanka in Hambantota.

Tharanga played patient knock of 28 off 47 balls with the help of two fours.

Tharanga and Sangakkara revived Sri Lankan innings after losing Tillakaratne Dilshan in the second over of the innings. Irfan Pathan struck in his first over to remove Dilshan and give India crucial breakthrough in the day-night one-dayer. (Times of India)

Sanga and Tharanga failed to maintain the run rate, it was around 6 per over, at least you should have 5 per over. if you show your reluctant toward the ball, the baller will take it as positive and put more pressure.

Thissara would have come early and Vice captain who wasted many bowls should have gone further down as our runrate was very low. Captain and the think tank must use the brain according to the situation of the match to get a higher run rate. Hope they learn hard way?

Poor feilding cost the match. If not due to Sanga it could have been a humiliating loss. Koli's superb form against us continues. My feeling is that India will win the series. Who knows this could be 5-0 win for India ?

In the comments column can see plenty of Cricket advisers. All these guys were not in the middle .... so whether win or lose admire the game of cricket. If Sri Lanka wins ah all good .... don't behave like Aussie spectators. Sanga did not build presure for Tharanga .... it was because Indians did bowl well at the time.

Sc Could you elaborate more how you came to your ridiculous opinion?

    huna Sunday, 22 July 2012 07:51 AM

SL will never chase and win high targets if Sanga comes as a one down batsmen . once again he played for his hundred while others tried to chase down the target and perished

Dilshan really messed up the match by dropping Sehwag on 00 and then he got out cheaply.

    Barath Sunday, 22 July 2012 07:31 AM

    India, world champions.

bonnie mallie Sunday, 22 July 2012 06:46 AM

Sanga keeps wickets - then you want him to play the openers role by coming into bat in 2nd over (see off the new ball which was swinging like crazy) then yoiu want him to be the middle order batsman by consolidating the innings while everyone gets out and finally he has to be the finisher as well............Dilshan played six balls was dropped once and then got out, chandimal thinks scoring every fifth game is enough etc - 315 was too much to chase...I am sure you have never played proper cricket to make comments like this !!

    Kalana Sunday, 22 July 2012 05:31 AM

Yes, I agreed, the rotation was not done. Sanga created pressure, that's why Tharanga got out.
    Malinga's poor bowling spell again.
Thisara has to consider about his bolowling economy rate. It is still too much.
Dinesh Chandimal again failed. Give oportunity to Thirimaanna.
    Another good spinner required

    sc Sunday, 22 July 2012 03:46 AM

sanga is responsible for our loss yesterday sad but its true

    neweha Sunday, 22 July 2012 02:17 AM

Aaaah after all the talks on FB i thought they would win the match even without batting :P

    sujith Sunday, 22 July 2012 01:58 AM

Bowling & Feilding let Sri Lanka down. Malinga's another typical spell against India!!!
