"A government that spent Rs.21,000 million on Deyata Kirula can afford to reduce the fuel prices," Inter University Students Union convener Sanjeewa Bandara said.

He charged that if the Government was committed to ease the burden of the people it would curtail the fancy life styles of the Ministers' and crack down on corruption.

The transport and electricity charges increased by a large percentage and soon water and telecom charges will also increase, Mr. Bandara said.

"Kerosene oil increased by 120%, diesel by 90% and petrol by 45%," Mr. Bandara charged.

According to him the fuel price hike triggered an increase in the prices of cement, transport, electricity and food. (Sumaiya Rizvi)

Many say students should not enter politics.
Students have grater knowledge of social injustice in this country.
As a citizen of this country he can stand against the injustice.

In Singapore minister's and parliament members salary were cut to reduce government expenses in the first place. Will our government do that ???

Jamis Banda Friday, 17 February 2012 04:23 AM

I think this guy should concentrate on studies and let the adults handle this type of issue - afterall, he has nothing to complain, he get's free education and we pay for that too.

    summa Friday, 17 February 2012 04:29 AM

First has anybody thought of what this person is saying? Where has Kerosene price increased by 120%, Deisel by 90 % and Petrol by 45%. Of course this is a lrage increase, but a "educated university student' who couldnt count the percentage is in my believing is not suitable to comment on any matter.

Whatever said and done when the elections come everyone vote for the said party and repent later.

Gas Banda Friday, 17 February 2012 06:22 AM

    Mr. Maurice

We all know the price hike in the world but it's the duty of the govt. to cut down on expenses for ministers and money spend on events like Dayata Kirula and give that benefit to the people. Then they can increase the prices by nominal percentage than increasing by substantial amount

    gajan99 Friday, 17 February 2012 01:11 AM

So what. We needed Dayata kirula to educate Srilankans.

    anura Friday, 17 February 2012 06:48 AM

absolute truth. if not for corruption and utter wasteful spending by the politicos, Sri Lanka has all the resources to be the wonder without "wonder of Asia" nonsense.

yea he's an adult and he has a voice and all of that. but i'd much rather see my tax money not get wasted on students like this. their primary objective must be to finish their education. then they can become educated politicians. instead of wasting their time on politics when they should be studying...

What economics do you know ? Please complete your degree first without wasting public money. Government could perhaps give free fuel for all if not for the spending to educate people like these.

    Pather Saturday, 18 February 2012 08:27 AM

People like Maurice who like to show themselves as good samaritans should remember how the Government acted when the world price of oil was coming down drastically and how much of the benefit was passed on to the people. Do you know the proportion of the Tax component compared to the cost price? REMEMBER the time when the Supreme Court gave a ruling that it was unfair to impose over 100% tax on any commodity and asked the Govt to reduce the fuel price and this decision was not complied with by the then Cabinet.

    chat Thursday, 16 February 2012 07:25 PM

I do not agree. Have you been to Anuradhapura recently? Have you seen the massive infrastructure projects carried out before the exhibition ? And by experience I do know there is much of personnel development in the area and its surburbs.
You have been in the University in many years ; perhaps its time to normal citizens to sum up how much tax money of theirs have spent on youself.

Though he is a student, He is an educated guy.In a democratic society, he has every rights to raise his voice against social injustice which affect his future.DO NOT try to suppress them. It will have very serious repercussions in years to come. What he is telling is absolute truth.

    Junta Thursday, 16 February 2012 05:45 PM

People before you sling mud at the government and the president, please remember this very government stopped a 30 year war . Plus, there has been a 300% increase in income in the local candle and matchbox industries, the average distance walked by citizens has increased by 227% , thereby reducing obesity by 40% and the road traffic has also reduced by 50% in the miracle of Asia !

Hehehe JVP on the move for another disaster,,, student union taken Gov for a bit of a challenge,,, worlds first by ever disastrous Marxist

    # terran Jayasooriya Thursday, 16 February 2012 06:19 PM

Lot of things in this world has changed by university students. Some countries the most powerful political power/stakeholder is the students. Coz they got brains. They look at the broader picture. You have to grow up soo much guys with this type of thinking & attitude. Besides you guys wont or cant do what he does anyway!

    loku Thursday, 16 February 2012 07:15 PM

A university student is an adult, and he or she has every right in a democracy to make opinions and advice known.

    dPora Thursday, 16 February 2012 02:58 PM

The only meaningful statemenet from this guy. But still he is a student. Advicing the gov isnt his job.

Minnal Sri Thursday, 16 February 2012 07:36 PM

Our government should listen to everybody's comments. Government can't correct always. Today our country is heading towards disastrous. Petrol/Kerosene/Diesel price increase are going to hit the ordinary people very badly. We will not see the impact now but we will see it in weeks time. Ordinary people who supported MR are going to pay heavy penalty. God help our nation.

    Sena Thursday, 16 February 2012 07:38 PM

If he can vote then he has all the right to hold the people to whom he voted accountable that's exactly what he is doing Being young he has no fear and is speaking out -good for him. There is just no point in trying to tell him that he is a student and must take his place on the contrary one must look at what is being said and if it is true or a lie and if it is true say so say what he said louder

    Ronny Thursday, 16 February 2012 09:02 PM

He maybe a student or a kid but he has spoken very sensibly unlike the young, old and experienced politicians of the present regime. He could be a future Colvin or N.M. So please don't insult the present day students.

mervyn perera Thursday, 16 February 2012 11:14 PM

Please tell the Electricity Board to release the Electricity Bills of All Ministers and Parliamentarians and also whether they have paid the bills. Do we have to pay their bills and all the bills of the present parliamentarians.

    AMT Thursday, 16 February 2012 11:48 PM

A student is a citizen in the making, and in democracy he has every right to make statements, which in this case is meaningful

    PS Thursday, 16 February 2012 11:50 PM

Student or no student, every citizen has a "right" to raise his voice in a democracy! When it comes to fuel (gasoline) however, any Gov. has very less control over the pricing. It is not a local matter but a world matter. Everywhere in the world the gasoline prices are going up at the moment! So, be fare people!

    Senurads Friday, 17 February 2012 12:13 AM

OMG!! this is really true... If the Govt. can spend so much on an exhibition every year, why doesn't it have any reserves to spend during crisis like these. The govt. needs to clean their act, come clean and reduce the prices soon. Im pretty sure 2/3 of the population who voted for the govt. was not expecting this.

Senior Citizen Friday, 17 February 2012 12:14 AM

Sanjeeva Bandara is a University Student and has been trained to think. How many members of the present Government have even seen the entrance to a University. They are only clever at showing off, at the cost of the common people.

    Maurice Friday, 17 February 2012 12:57 AM

Fuel prices are steadily going up all over the world not just Sri Lanka, don't blame the government for the hikes, blame the oil producing nations! If anyone of you are following the markets daily, you will see the escalating price of a barrel of oil. Likewise if you are following world news, you will hear and see (likes of BBC/CNN) so many countries fuel prices going up. When fuel prices go up, cost of other goods go up too and once again, its happening all around the world even in the poorest of nations. I know for a fact in Australia, the price of a litre of fuel fluctuates almost daily and is always going up...at least in Sri Lanka, we have a fixed price for a long period of time and every fuel dispenser has to maintain one price, not the same in Australia, each dispenser has different prices.
