Floods continue, weather improves

Although the rains which lashed out the last couple of days, has eased a bit, most of the areas in the country remained inundated, while the death toll raised to 16 with 14 others missing. Some 175,558 individuals were reported to be affected by the bad weather, Disaster Management Centre said.

Several roads including the Kandy-Badulla road, Padiyapala-Walapane road, Puttalam-Chilaw Main road, the A5 road between Nuwara-Eliya and Chenkaladi, Potuwill-Panama road and the Nuwara-Eliya-Welimada road were closed due to floods and earth slips.

Disaster Management Centre together with the police and the security forces were making every effort to clear the blocked roads.

It was reported that some 15,000 acres of paddy land went under water in the Eastern Province and in several areas including Lagugala, Putuvil, Panama, and Elabada.

Disaster Management Centre, Deputy Director Media Sarath Lal Lumara said 146 houses have been destroyed while 805 were partly damaged. Cultivated land in Dambulla were also reported to be under water.

It was also reported that the train services in some areas were disrupted due to floods. This included the Up-country main line night mail, Rajarata Rajini which operates from Colombo to Omanthai via Vavuniya were cancelled due to floods. (YP)
