Carlton SC gets Rs.200 mn tax cuts for racing cars: JVP

The Carlton Sports Club has received tax concessions of more than Rs.200 million as a result of the budget proposal to ease import duty on racing cars, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) charged yesterday.

JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference that it had been revealed that this club had been told of this concession even before the budget was presented in parliament.

He asked how the government revealed budget secrets before the Budget was presented in Parliament by the President who is also the Finance Minister.
Mr. Dissanayake said this club had imported two consignments of racing cars comprising Lamborghini, Porsche and Aston Martins at a cost of Rs.99 million.

He said this club had not only taken advantage of the prior knowledge on the easing of import duty in the budget proposals but had also evaded paying five other taxes including the Nation Building Tax, Airport and Port Development Levy and VAT. This had been done through the Car Net system.

Mr. Dissanayake said under this system, taxes are charged from importers but they are not expected to pay and it’s kept aside as a bank guarantee. This system he said is usually followed when vehicles are brought for development projects by foreign agencies where the taxes are set aside as a bank guarantee so that they complete the work witching the stipulated time frame.

“The Carlton Sports Club had used this system to avoid paying taxes,” he said and urged that the matter be investigated because Sri Lanka had lost more than Rs.200 million from this fraudulent act and how the tradition of keeping the budget proposals a secret had been violated with the sophisticated racing vehicles being  imported just prior to the Budget. These cars are owned by the respective drivers. In any race in the world, drivers import their cars for the period. Under car net, Cars have to be imported back before the stipulated period.

Closing so many roads and causing such inconvenience to the public, wasting public funds on preparing the city, do these races generate any income to the government or to the municipality? Why do we have to bear all these costs to entertain a selected few? Why does our brave soldiers have to be degraded to the level of slaves carrying sand bags? Shameful that we as a nation come to silently bear these things without any complain. It won't be very long when they will come and take even our clothes away.

What has happened to SriLanka these days? Who runs Carlton Sports ? If the Rajapaksa regime is involved in this using their political influence they should retire from politics altogether.
Who runs the country these days , honest Rajapaksas or the corrupt Rajapaksas from miracle of Asia?

    R.A.J Wednesday, 19 December 2012 08:04 AM

its joke writing an article that they don't have the first clue about! These car's are from a International series equivalent to Formula 1 in their own class scheme... owned by independent race teams as part of a championship run across Asia. The press wants freedom of speech, ability to write articles and convey information to the public... they should first start by finding out the truth, being informed of the facts and understanding that they cant bullshit every story to suit their own damn headline.... You don't need transparency in the form of a few documents that are 'bought' from a apparent officials to realise that these cars have come down with their foreign drivers for the sole purpose of having a demo race and then re-exported back to the GT3 championship in Hong Kong... a little research and common sense is all you need...

    R.A.J Wednesday, 19 December 2012 08:07 AM

BTW these same cars came down last year... same format.. same documents... did they stay in the country? Yet again a little research would show that they left the country after the night race and headed to Japan for the start of their racing season... i really have lost faith in any productive journalism these days... seems like everyone wants to write a story just to get their name out... The presidents son drove a Polo Cup car that 3 other Sri Lankans also drove... if you hold a valid competing license, any sri lankan can pay the stipulated amount and race the said vehicle and class... He didnt race a 'lamborghini' and he didnt 'import' a race car... and Yes last year we had 2 lamborghini's, 2 Porsche's, 4 Lotus Cup Cars and a Nissan Z that were brought down for the race and which left afterwards...

Chinthaka de Hoot Wednesday, 19 December 2012 09:45 AM
