Tourists from South Asian countries that export labour to the UAE will require a university degree to get a visa as the rich Gulf state fights an illegal influx, a newspaper reported. Electricians, pipefitters, masons, farmers, drivers, tailors and cleaners from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Philippines are now banned from obtaining a tourist visa, Gulf News daily said citing a senior immigration official. The new measure sets a university degree as a prerequisite to obtain a visa, the official said.

“The Federal Residency Department… has decided to adopt stricter regimes for tourist, visit and conference visas to curb the influx of blue-collar workers from many labour exporting countries,” said the official. “This would help significantly reduce the risk that individuals engaged in organised crime or the trafficking of persons could gain entry to the country,” he said. Tourist visas are usually arranged through hotels or airlines and travel agents.

Tourism grew rapidly in the UAE, especially in the glitzy emirate of Dubai, where the number of tourists increased to 9.3 million in 2011, up 10 percent from the previous year. The UAE has millions of foreign workers, mostly from South Asian countries. The expat-dominated population is estimated to have grown to around 8.2 million by the end of 2010, with UAE nationals making up only 11.47 percent. (AFP)

Finally an answer to SB's and Bandula's dream of opening Private Universities. All unemployed graduates, the JVP types and FUTA will get the opportunity to raise dignity of labour by awarding Unversity degrees to masons, drivers, cleaners, housmaids et,al.

Sri Lanka can be the first country to award such degrees. Well done Dubai.

If we ourselves look down on dark skin (how many fairness creams do you see here) how can we expect respect from others, Sri Lankans in general are probably the darkest people in Asia.

    Akbar Thursday, 20 September 2012 06:52 AM

correction......it should be 'muslims living in India'. An 'Indian muslim' has no loyalty towards India hence he cannot be called an Indian muslim.

Gam Pappa Thursday, 20 September 2012 07:48 AM

    Lankawick Wednesday, 19 September 2012 05:11 AM

DONT go and spend your hard earned money...in Arab
nations...where we are treated like animals...while the Arabs
look up to the "White" people...

    Want a Vacation...visit Singapore....NO visa needed...
or friendly Vietnam - Cambodia - Laos - Myanmar - Thailand - etc...
Boycott any nation...that do not respect Sri Lanka Passport.

    A Sri Lankan Wednesday, 19 September 2012 04:59 AM

This is a wake up call to all Sri Lankans hoping to find employment in the middle east. It will not be easy to find employment without proper qualifications and those who are already employed are requested to provide copies of University Degrees or any other professional qualifications to renew resident visa for some categories of employment. These Governments are all out to reduce marginal work force and now it appears the same is extended for tourist visa's.

    Rj Wednesday, 19 September 2012 03:54 AM

Who will wash the Emirati dishes and clean their streets? Europeans? Lol

    TC Wednesday, 19 September 2012 05:21 AM

you need to earn the respect man. can't blame the others for what we have earned our selves. if we returned to our home country as proper visitors, i don't think we will have to go through visa trouble at high commissions and embassies.

Babi Achci Wednesday, 19 September 2012 05:09 AM

They should say from recognized universities.

    devin Wednesday, 19 September 2012 05:15 AM

easy go to India buy a degree and then apply for visa. Very cheap

    but Wednesday, 19 September 2012 05:43 AM

but come to UAE to earn some money and not spend it back here in the UAE.. the structure is such that people who earn here are exposed to so much luxuries that they just spend it all here.. use your brains.. earn some money by coming to UAE.. and then just get back to SL.. There is no place like home!!!

    sam Wednesday, 19 September 2012 05:49 AM

    who is talking here?

Pramod Fernando Wednesday, 19 September 2012 07:03 AM

Rj, There is a legal procedure to enter the UAE as a labourer. Not by using a " visit visa".

    bab00n Wednesday, 19 September 2012 06:57 AM

This goes to show our pathetic status as a country in the eyes of the world. We are 3rd world poor country famous for what?? illegal immigrants and low paid coolies. So much for "Ascharya".

    bab00n Wednesday, 19 September 2012 06:59 AM

Can't blame them. We have dark skin. Dark skin is bad everywhere.

    Ajith Wednesday, 19 September 2012 07:02 AM
