The United National Party (UNP) today demanded the resignation of Army spokesman Ruwan Wanigasuriya over the ‘childish and inappropriate statements' he had made on the Weliweriya clash.

“The statements made by Brigadier Wanigasuriya were unbecoming of a person holding the rank of spokesman and a disgrace to the Army uniform. Therefore he should resign,” UNP Provincial Councillor Niroshan Padukka told a news conference.

He said the Army had also been politicised.

“We have doubts whether it is the Sri Lankan Army or the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Army,” he said.

Mr. Padukka condemned the killings at Weliweriya and said the government should take adequate action to prevent such incidents happening in the future.

He urged the authorities to resolve the causes that resulted in the unfortunate incidents at Weliweriya. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Those who gave shooting order were either not in the right state of mind or under the influence of liquor or sleep-talking.

When they use military against innocent people ( Not against armed people) , We knew what is next on their agenda. We have worn them not to fall into fake love with this military machine. It is used by the ruling parties to oppress general masses. This is a violent act , we all should raise our voices. We must not pay our taxes to kill our people. Stop paying taxes.

If ministers were made to resign for making "childish and inappropriate statements' then the entire cabinet would have to step down.
On the other hand making sensible and mature comments will get you fired.

    Modaya Monday, 05 August 2013 10:29 AM

True enough to say that Sri Lanka is the Modayange Rata. Government Authorities know this and trying to fool by issuing some false statements to majority illiterate citizens who are their main supporters.

    johan Monday, 05 August 2013 09:15 AM

This is not the first unfortunate incident.Masses protesting in
Colombo they will continue, almost every week .In rural areas
Govt.feel people are illiterate they must be punished if they do
    the same thing.

Porky Pig Monday, 05 August 2013 08:08 AM

When the spokesman was asked who gave order, he response was a inquire was on and could not comment. However he went on to say that on victim has died due a blunt instrument being used. What a great discovery.

Porky Pig Monday, 05 August 2013 08:05 AM

I totally agree with the UNP on this point. The army spokesman was talking bull.
