The All Ceylon Government Medical Officers’ Association (ACGMOA) today condemned the arrest of 4 of its activists who were distributing leaflets in Matara against the introduction of private medical universities in the country.

The ACGMOA allege that the phones of the medical students who were taken into custody were deactivated and that the medical students were questioned by the police for several hours.

Further they said that a large number of leaflets that were meant to be distributed were also taken to police custody while the students were threatened not to distribute the leaflets in the future.

The AGMOA pointed out that there is no necessity to introduce private medical universities in the country and their campaign against the introduction of these universities cannot be stopped by government suppression. (Daily Mirror online)

Mark Antony Sunday, 07 November 2010 02:21 AM

Of course we need private medical faculties in this country. But we need to make sure
    1. Under the supervision UGC
    2. SLMC and UGC approval unlike the Malabe Medical faculty started last year.
3.Private teaching hospital. Currently non of the private hospitals are ready to accommodate medical students as thier patient are not willing to be seen by medical students
    4. All necessary facilities. Unlike a computer degree course where you need few computers a medical faculty needs lot of laboratory facilities. Otherwise we will be producing substandard graduates in this country. Who will kill people

Private medical universities are a necessity because

    1) It will improve the doctor:patient ratio
    2) To reduce the doctors monopoly
    3) To improve Sri Lanka's medical services and the health services
    4) To improve economy

Anyone who talks against this is against the well being of Sri Lankan citizen and can be considered as a traitor.

Prof Wickramatillake Saturday, 06 November 2010 01:01 PM

    Is this a NEO GMOA?

    herath Saturday, 06 November 2010 01:00 PM

    yes, i second that.

    Anushka Saturday, 06 November 2010 06:15 AM

Now they'll probably go on strike too. My god, what a sad state our country is in. The government, opposition and even the citizens are only thinking about themselves and fighting among each other.

    Z Fernando Saturday, 06 November 2010 10:57 AM

Good question. Lot of people are confused like this. So called ACGMOA is a collection of few "doctors" who are driven by JVP . JVP tried to ruin all the powerful trade unions in Sri Lanka just for their political gains. They were successful in ports and few other places, but not in doctors community. Initially, they contested for GMOA elections. But doctors realised the danger and rejected them with a great majority. Then these losers got together and formed ACGMOA.

    SK Saturday, 06 November 2010 08:27 AM

Is this the same "GMOA" or a different one???

    Upul Saturday, 06 November 2010 07:52 AM

Why going through this trouble. Allow any one to treat patients if he is willing. Then we don't need to talk about private universities or medical officers going strike

    Yehiya-Doha Saturday, 06 November 2010 07:50 AM

Govt.arrest is wrong. But privatemedical college is need. There are lot of children going for medical education for foreign countries. Why we can't save the money.

    Minister Saturday, 06 November 2010 07:15 AM

Dear doctors, Your issuing statements against arrests just because a person distributes leaflets is not enough. Go to the Supreme Courts and get a ruling on this issue. Then everybody knows whether issuing a leaflet is legal or otherwise.

    jayam Saturday, 06 November 2010 07:10 AM

ACGMOA is the trade union backed by JVP. They have only handful of members. At the moment they can do making such statements only. They can not go for a strike.

    Lanka Saturday, 06 November 2010 07:07 AM

THIS IS A DEFUNCT ASSOCIATION. DO NOT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. THIS IS NOT GMOA FRIENDS BUT A SIDE KICK OF LEFT POLITICAL PARTY

    Faqi Saturday, 06 November 2010 06:41 AM

AGMOA you are acting like a dictator with selfish ends. What is it to you if there are Private medical colleges in our country? If parents are willing to spend the money to send their children to private universities, what business is that of yours? They are not asking you to pay. You are acting like a dog in the manger. This is no concern of yours, every one who wishes to be medical practitioner should have the opportunity to do so in a free democracy.

    Fanam Saturday, 06 November 2010 06:29 AM

If you are against the governments move, then sit and discuss with the government as responsible officers. If not possible, use the media for this instead of using University Students for this. Let them focus on their studies. May be you have a valid reason for your protest but we also dont like to see a monopoly through you. Please be open for development, may be you should make suggestions for improvement without totally opposing the idea.

    Godaya Saturday, 06 November 2010 06:27 AM

Everybody has to been given a chance....if you cannot put yourself into that "selected" group of entrants to local medical college, then if you have the means, you should be able to attend a private university and fulfill your dream of becoming a doctor. Kudos to the government for not bowing down to unnecessary pressure and going ahead with this plan.

Come on people of the ACGMOA, stop being selfish and let everyone have the opportunity to reach their goals....

The Judge Saturday, 06 November 2010 06:20 AM

Who are they to tell the government NOT to establish Private Medical Universities in the first place.? All our neighbouring countries have many private universities, thereby catering to all eligibale students who score stipulated marks.

    Thomas Saturday, 06 November 2010 06:16 AM

The private Universities will be levying fees, unlike the Govt Universities. Our doctors coming out of free medical colleges do not know the value of the education imparted FREE to them , and hold the patients at rason by going on strikes. WHY SHOULD THEY BE AGAINT PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGES, is it to deprive others of a medical degree????????????????
