Suspected Thawheed Jamath cadre remanded till May 7

A suspect who was detained by the Keselwatte Police in Colombo on suspicion of having links with the proscribed National Thawheed Jamath movement was today ordered to be remanded till May 7 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage.

The Keselwatte Police producing the suspect before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court in relation to a search carried out in a shoe shop in Gampola, Police had detected a hard disk in which there was a photograph of the suspect posing with two suicide cadres who hailed from Gampola.

They said they were further investigating to determine whether the suspect was having any links with the National Thawheed Jamath movement.

The Counsel who appeared for the suspect informed the Magistrate that the device detected by the Police from the suspect’s possession was one that is used to scan any defect in refrigerators and air conditioners.

The Western Province Intelligence Division of the Police had arrested the suspect Mohamed Farook Mohamed Fawaz at Keselwatte on an information provided to them .

Following the arrest of the suspect, the Police had recovered the device suspecting it to be one used in the bomb blasts carried out island wide. The suspect has been a resident of Keselwatte for nine years. (T. Farook Thajudeen)
