Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has withdrawn the proposal made to appoint retired navy officer Shamal Fernando as the Director General of Customs and to reinstate P.S.M.Charles who held the post previously.

The Minister took this decision following the strike launched by the Customs workers against the appointment of a navy officer as the Director General of Customs. (Kelum Bandara)

Tamils in general are less corrupted,... even though TNA is taking LTTE's stand, they are not corrupted or after money or power.

Good sense has prevailed. The Customs is a closedservice and as such it is not good to put outsiders to head it. Certainly not a Navy officer. The Customsofficers were well within their rights to protest and strike.

    Good lesson to haphazard decision.
