The Government has decided to close all Economic Centres in the country to prevent the people from gathering into economic centres exposing them to the COVID-19, informed sources said.

The Presidential Task Force to Coordinate and Monitor the Delivery of Continuous Services for the Sustenance of Overall Community Life headed by Basil Rajapaksa, has taken pertinent measures in relation to the distribution of goods to the people.

Sources said that there is a system in place to purchase vegetables and fruits from farmers and distribute them through Divisional Secretariats throughout the island. This will be coordinated via emails, WhatsApp and fax.

The five dedicated economic centres of Dambulla, Thambuththegama, Nuwara -Eliya, Keppetipola and Embilipitiya have been identified for this purpose.

A circular has been issued by the Secretary to the Public Administration and Home Affairs ministry for this purpose.

Sources stressed that people need not come to economic centres to buy goods because all necessary steps had been taken to bring the products to the masses instead. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

No food items come to our doorsteps as it is said. There are two small trucks that came for the past 16 days and by the time they came, there were not much of things to buy, because they had finished selling most of the things on their way. It is said that, "necessary steps had been taken to bring the products to the masses instead". That is a big lie and hope the president sees this message.

Shutting down and closing down is easy. Vegetables are perishables. I don't think the state apparatus is in readiness to make the purchases from the farmers. Finally the poor peasants will be compelled to discard their produces.

Very good move. That means from Economic Centres/Divisional Secretariats/Grama Niladaries to End Users. Awesome idea.

Yes, you may shut down. But what about the food for people? You need to have a proper plan and a mechanism in place first of all before taking such harsh decisions. Please don't penalize the people for your faults.

This is not a correct decision at the crucial situation. Inbound
