Govt. should recover $98 million from Airbus Company: Eran

The incumbent Government should take steps to recover $98 million from Airbus paid by the Yahapalana Government as cancellation fees for returning four A350 in 2016, UNP MP Eran Wickramaratne said today.

Addressing a news briefing, he said this in the wake of revelation of the alleged corruption in dealings of Airbus with several countries including SriLankan Airlines.

“According to disclosures in courts in Washington, Paris and London, Airbus for years conducted a massive scheme to offer and pay bribes involving very senior executives in several countries including Sri Lanka,” the MP said.

“In 2017, Sri Lanka had to pay $98 million in penalties for cancelling the order in 2016 and returning four A350 'extra wide-body' aircraft that is specifically designed for long haul routes and unsuitable for the airline's business model,’ he added.

Wickramaratne said the Airbus Company had increased the selling price of these aircraft leading the relevant authorities to pay additional payments for the purchase of the aircraft.

“It is clear that these transactions have not been done in a legal manner and thus the government should ask the Airbus Company to refund the $98 million,” he said.

Meanwhile, he requested the Attorney General to take necessary legal actions against local individuals involved in these transactions. (By Sheain Fernandopulle)

Don't talk nonsense Wickremaratne. It was a stupid and expensive mistake done by your boss RW to cancel those state-of-the-art A350 aircraft. We either had, have or will have enough long haul routes to operate that aircraft. Namely European and Australian routes. Let's look at the figures. OK Chandrasena was promised 17 million US and paid 2 million US. Definitely he shouldn't have done it. How much your stupid Ranil paid to Airbus Industrie to cancel the order? 98 million US. The majority of your Yahapalana people have no brains at all. But we expected some sense from you. It seems you too are no exception. RW and you Yahapalana goons should sell your personal assets and pay back the government. It's people's money you wasted.

How about the Billions of Rupees that spirited away by the Rajapaksha clang. If President Gothabaya is serious of cleaning out the dirt, he should go after them and their corrupt activities. Remember if this is not done now generations will curse you. People have given you the mandate to make Sri Lanka prosperous. Only way to achieve it is to wipe out corruption of the past, present and the future. Stand firm and do it Mr. President for Mother Lanka.

Eran, who ordered four extra A350's? Didn't you know the cost of returning an Airbus A350 Mr Ex-Finance Minister? The bribes have nothing to do with ordering (and cancelling) 4 extra planes. It was in the contract and you should have done your homework. US$ 98Mil (= Rs 17,738,000,000) could have been put to better use to uplift the living conditions of your fellow countrymen.
