A magnitude 5.4 earthquake has struck in the North Indian Ocean, near South east coast of Sri Lanka at about 2.34 am today, the Department of Meteorology announced.
However, the department said that there is NO tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present with the effect of above Earthquake.” Therefore, the coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe,” it said in a statement.
