The Sri Lanka Navy has taken pertinent measures to tighten the security around the county to prevent persons from other countries from fleeing to Sri Lanka due to the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in those countries, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva said.

The Commander said there was a high possibility of persons to flee to Sri Lanka from South India amid the coronavirus outbreak in India.

“Accordingly, the Navy has increased patrols and monitoring along the coastal belt of the island with paying special attention to the Northern, North-Western, Eastern, Western and North Eastern sea areas,” he said.

The Navy Commander said the Indian authorities had also been informed to tighten their borders to prevent migrants from crossing the international maritime boundary to Sri Lanka.

“If a vessel carrying migrants entered Sri Lankan waters, the vessel will be sent back to its point of origin," the Navy Commander highlighted.

“The local fishermen and relevant authorities have been instructed to be on alert of any suspicious vessels at sea and to inform the Navy when such a vessel is detected," he added.

Moreover, he said the Sri Lanka Air Force had too increased its maritime observation capacity to assist in the process.

It is matter of time before India is completely taken over by coronavirus. Then the consequences to Sri Lanka would be apocalyptic unless our navy cut off all links to India.

According to Tamil sources the Rajapakases are trying to prevent Tamil free movement between North and Tamil land in Southern India. They are trying to stop Tamilians traversing between their lands and stopping cultural and population exchanges. The pandemic is an excuse. Disgraceful

No such Tamils alive in this world.. There's only Indians and Sri Lankans.. and no such Tamilian land anywhere ever! Only Indian land and Sri Lankan land... with Sri Lanka being owned by the Sinhalese only.

    ChanakaJ Sunday, 12 April 2020 03:36 AM

Sri Lanka is not part of Tamil Nadu! If Tamils want to move between two separate countries, they will have to follow usual procedures.

    E. Weerakon Sunday, 12 April 2020 08:34 AM

You must be out of your mind to even mention this kind of misinformation. At this critical time SL Tamils are not stupid enough to travel to and from the so called Tamil land in southern India. What the government is trying to do is to prevent Visa versa from happening. Don't make such stupid statements and disrupt ethnic harmony.

Who takes care of you when you get infected in India and also when you bring it back to your house in Jaffna or any where else in Sri Lanka? Donkey stop playing the stupid race card. Be a Sri Lankan in every sense and forget the racism. Does Covid -19 care if you are Tamil, Singhala Muslim or alien. It only needs you to be stupid and selfish!

    Jeeves Sunday, 12 April 2020 11:31 AM

Didn't know we were annexed to South India for free movement!

This action should have been taken when airlines were stoped from coming. Daily Mirror should not publish politically motivated malicious comments using nick names.
