Bus fares for private busses are expected to be increased by a minimum of 10 percent with effect from next week, the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne said today.

Addressing a press conference he said the decision was made in line with the recent increase in fuel prices by the government.

Wijeratne said Association had informed the National Transport Commission (NTC) yesterday of the change in fares.

The NTC is yet to approve the decision. Accordingly, the minimum fare of Rs. 10 will increase to Rs. 11. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

In keeping with the governments policy of formula and with the exponential increase in the cost of living this is acceptable. Increase fares so that the fares are in multiple of Rs. 5 or better Rs. 10.

When the prices come down will you decrease the bus fare in the same way Mr. Dutu Gemunu. Also why don't you look into the problems face. If you are a president only to request for increases you should go home. There are many issues to be looked into as the commuters are being harassed. Don't you have eyes and years for those.

In Europe the private bus companies are calculating their prices by their own without the interference of the government. The prices of the same routes are different depends on the company and the times. At rush hours the prices are higher. Because of the competition the prices are very cheap. The short distance an inner-city routs are running by government owned companies at fixed prices.

Bus fair will be increased every time fuel prices are increased and they will never reduce when formula reduces fuel. For example bus fair that is 100 will become 110 now. In two months if fuel goes down to 117 bus fair will remain same and in another two montgs if fuel go back to 138 bus fair will be increased by another 10%.
