The Prison Department has taken steps to transfer at least 30 hard core criminals who are at present detained in various prisons across the country, including underworld lynchpin Prabhath Madusanka alias ‘Barrel Sanka’ to Boossa high security prison.
Prison Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said the Department is planning to increase the number of prison cells at the Boossa prison to 76. Earlier that the Boossa prison had the facility to house 46 inmates. However, the Prisons Department will construct an additional 30 prison cells.
Accordingly, notorious underworld criminals, criminals who engage in organized crimes and drug traffickers who are detained in other prisons at present would also be transferred to Boossa.
He said high-tech surveillance equipment has been set up at the Boossa Prison to monitor any prisoner using mobile phones to communicate with outsiders in addition to 24x7 CCTV system and STF security.
Currently, hard core criminals such as Kanjipaanai Imran, Wele Suda, Kosgoda Tharaka and Podi Lassi are being detained at the Boossa prison.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
