Why do they put people in prison for not paying fines? If they cannot pay let them declare bankruptcy.

50% WILL BE BACK AGAIN WITHIN ONE MONTH THAT IS NORMAL SYSTEM. tHEY LIKE INSIDE BETTER THAN OUT SIDE.

See how poor they are. Prison system should organise a system of creating money for their valuable skill and talents to earn money for their products to give them a satisfactory amount of savings to be independent...If so they won't come back prison again.

wouldhave been a worthy cause to ahve let go of POLITICAL prisoners... They are NOT guilty of petty or any theft... or even crime.... Anyone can frame charges and pull strings to have someone accused....

What about the former commander of the army that defeated the terrorists. When will he be released?
Analysis Saturday, 04 February 2012 08:58 PM
It is good to give inmates freedom as they appreciate freedom like anyone of us but there has to be policy framework and boundaries implemented to release prisoners. We have seen rapists being released in the past. Presdient has the powers though he should demonstrate such releases are not based on favouritsm or neoptism etc. Policy should only be the document. Policy has to be drafted by judges or similar background not by politicians.

What happened to our dear Mr Sarath Fonseka? How come he is not included in 1450 prisoners released today? Revenge is sweeter...............

Still many innocent people are inside including the most prestigious one. Really shame

How about prisoner without any guilty
Daya Saturday, 04 February 2012 04:43 PM
Those who found guilty provided pardon. At the same time those who don't even know what sort of crime they committed were kept under prison cells for decades merely on suspicion using emergency. Go merry with "Law of the Land"

WHEN WILL BE THE ENTIRE NATION RELEASED FROM THE POLITICAL IMPRISONMENT???
Poor Srilankans who are sober in politics.
alistaire.brown Saturday, 04 February 2012 04:22 PM
What I cannot understand is how people can be sent to prison for being unable to pay fines. That is barbaric !
citizen1 Saturday, 04 February 2012 03:29 PM
Very obvious is the absence of a prisoner who is being held captive for being a the people's hero. The curse on those carrying out this injustice is probably at an all time high since the country is going down the toilet....
citizen1 Saturday, 04 February 2012 03:24 PM
All the cops have huge bellies, and the prisoners look fit !!
loop Saturday, 04 February 2012 10:30 AM
Those who are guilty released and innocent in prison....
Shameless lankans... !
AMT Saturday, 04 February 2012 10:06 AM
OMG, they had to send 70 years old to prison, should have sent them to the elders home ??
Calistus Jayatilleke Saturday, 04 February 2012 09:33 AM
But no political prisoners, I suppose!
