UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed the party working committee that he is willing to resign from the leadership at any moment, party sources said.

According to sources, Mr. Wickremesinghe has said this in response to a few members of the working committee who had said the party should not suffer any more over leadership struggles.

“Mr. Wickremesinghe was responding to the working committee members and highlighted that the party should be reorganised before handing over to a new leader. The party has to be reorganised either from top to bottom or from the bottom to the top,” a source said.

The Daily Mirror learns that new officer bearers will be appointed at the next working committee meeting while the new leader will be appointed by next year. Newly elected Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene also confirmed that new officer bearers would be appointed soon while the new leader will be appointed in a few months. (Yohan Perera)

    That moment is now.

    Sambo Tuesday, 15 September 2020 12:56 PM

So you will eat up the balance by the time a new leader is found.

    Bandu Tuesday, 15 September 2020 01:07 PM

Top to bottom reorganisation with the top knocked off quickly is best. He is willing to resign from the leadership at any moment - well that moment was when you personally suffered in Colombo and the party in the whole country, all because of you and your gang of crooks

Western Thinking Tuesday, 15 September 2020 01:14 PM

You keep saying that every day but you never will Mr. Western Thinking.

Lanka putha Tuesday, 15 September 2020 04:07 PM

    Do it now please

    Metabu Tuesday, 15 September 2020 04:15 PM

What the heck? Thought he already resigned in disgrace. OMG. Pity UNP.

    ara Tuesday, 15 September 2020 04:18 PM

who cares, can youll stop reporting this nonsense

    brainmaster Tuesday, 15 September 2020 04:22 PM

why not now, this is further weakening the party

Janaka from Matara Tuesday, 15 September 2020 04:24 PM

The leader of UNP serves at the pleasure of its membership. And they have spoken. There is no need to hide behind a Working Committee's approval. I think the working committee meeting itself is chaired by the party leader. So who is going to move a motion?

    ranjith Tuesday, 15 September 2020 05:09 PM

I think yet you have a bit of a duty to complete. Still UNP has one seat remain in Parliament Sir.

    Anthony. R Tuesday, 15 September 2020 05:29 PM

Now is the moment, why wait Go home take your Deputy also with you , so that a New UNP be formed with all your Gang of Crooks gone with you. Please don't Disgrace the party any further

Vadivelu Yogaratnm Tuesday, 15 September 2020 06:05 PM

UNP is dead and buried it doesn't matter what u do cannot fool the people anymore. All because of your selfishness and greed.

    D Senanayake Tuesday, 15 September 2020 06:28 PM

A Royalist is destroying what a good Thomian has created. RIP UNP!!

    Mahesh Tuesday, 15 September 2020 07:07 PM

A time waster.. This fellow should have left after 2004 defeat. He wil never leave. Probably this fellow canbe buried in sirikotha itself after he expire

    Leel Tuesday, 15 September 2020 07:17 PM

Destroy party in 26 years. Destroy country in 6/7 years. What achievement.

    Premadasa Tuesday, 15 September 2020 07:27 PM

LOL. Top~bottom restructuring does not work for a bottomless party! Bottom is with the SJB

    perera Tuesday, 15 September 2020 07:39 PM

now that he has brought in his family member keen to give him the top slot -shame

    S.H.Moulana Tuesday, 15 September 2020 07:49 PM

    Sadly that moment never come!

Ronnie Bugger Tuesday, 15 September 2020 08:08 PM

So what are you waiting for, you hypocrite, just go.

Mahen Ranasinghe Tuesday, 15 September 2020 08:10 PM

Ranil, stop talking. Just get out. Don't even stay as an adviser, officially or unofficially. You killed the UNP. Let the new leader do what he wants to TRY and give life to it. You maneuvered things to stay as the leader, every time the members wanted to reorganise and now you want to wait until it is reorganised. Owa konde bandapu cheenunta kiyanna.

    Resigned Tuesday, 15 September 2020 08:12 PM

In any other country a political party leader would have resigned of their own volition at least after a second defeat, if not the first depending on the surrounding circumstances. Cabinet Ministers regularly resign over issues. This is common in democracies and is a measure of its maturity index. As for SL, what can one say other than resign does not mean re-sign.

Demuni Uduwara Tuesday, 15 September 2020 08:14 PM

Our people haven't really understood that who is Ranil.

Sam panditha Tuesday, 15 September 2020 08:34 PM

If you have any decency- RESIGN. Headed the party for 25 years. Three Presidential elections you ducked knowing you would lose (Instead fielded Sarath Fonseka, Sirisena and Sajith) Blocked Sajith as much as possible. UNP was defeated en-mass not a single seat. Your action led to disgruntled UNPers not voting and resulting in Pohottuwa getting 2/3 RESIGN, RESIGN, RESIGN

IGNATIUS RASIAH Wednesday, 16 September 2020 07:57 AM

High time you did that. I heard it before. UNP will be better off without you. Your reign is over. Bring new talent in.

    Ranilism Wednesday, 16 September 2020 09:21 AM

"he is willing to resign" - spirit is willing but the flesh is weak ! !

    R. Anthony Wednesday, 16 September 2020 10:54 AM

Please forward all these comments to Ranil and his deputy.

    Bandara Wednesday, 16 September 2020 12:01 PM

He is one of the best leaders that the UNP ever had. He had to work with incorrect person.

Kumara Welikala Wednesday, 16 September 2020 05:26 PM

UNP - mother of all parties - and oldest in SL had winning leaders until Ranil took over . After it was proved that he could never lead to win, elite club decided that party should not be given any potential winner if he is not of superior cast and elite family . Only Senanayakes, Wijewardenas, or Wickramasinghes, could be the leader . Ranil accomplished the job for 26 years. Now, inexperienced Ruwan is entrusted with the job of staying by dying UNP and taking to the cemetery once dead . Take my word , UNP will brethe its last when next election ,what ever it is , will take place
