The vaccination drive which is currently underway in the Western Province would be extended to three more districts such as Kandy, Kurunegala and Ratnapura, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said today.

She told media that they had so far vaccinated over 1.1 million people and expecting to vaccinate about 13 million people.

“The vaccination drive will be rolled out to the three districts once it is completed in the Western Province,” she said.

The Health Minister said the vaccines would be given to people above 30 years of age.

“The number of people above 60 is estimated to 2.3 million, while there are 5.3 million of people between the age 40 to 50. The number of people between 30 to 40 is estimated around 3.3 million,” she added.

Moreover, she said the vaccination drive in other districts would also be carried out as per the supply of vaccines. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

What happens to those who were given Astrazeneca first dose? We are still waiting for the second one.

    Rahal Friday, 14 May 2021 09:28 PM

Very unlikely you would get the second dose from Asta Zenika. Apparently only 300,000 doses were available for the second dose when a total of some 900,000 took the first dose. That leaves out 2/3rds (or 600,000) which won't get it. From what I hear most of the 300,000 of the doses reserved for the second jab have been used up by the government politicians/ those with links to the regime, their family members and supporters. So the bitter truth is that you are very unlikely to get it.

The most vulnerable category is 60 years and over who should have been given priority as originally planned which has resulted in deaths of the old . Who is responsible for this change

where is your "Mutti". what an idiot health minister you are! shame!

John Stewart Friday, 14 May 2021 09:12 PM

I agree with Fernando and Terrence. My wife (82) and I (78) have, so far, not been able to get a second dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca in Negombo. So, Sri Lanka has vaccinated over 1.1 million people during the past four months. Week before last, Germany vaccinated one million in ONE DAY! Why are we being so slow?

    Jebba Friday, 14 May 2021 10:16 PM

We are slow because the government is staffed with buffoons, idiots, kalakaniyas, ponnayas, wankers

Please make sure that the vaccination drive is carried out in an orderly manner. Almost all the vaccination centres are in utter chaos. No one cares about health guidelines. Very soon there will be a vaccine cluster unless the authorities make arrangements to tidy up the process. Thanks.

Why Rathnapura on the list? Is it because the minister is from Rathnapura? Is this a political influence? More than 60% of Matale District is lockdown for the last two weeks.

    Maithree Saturday, 15 May 2021 02:13 AM

No proper policy . All countries give priority for elderly, chronic disease patients, health care workers etc., But in Sri Lanka it’s based on districts? At least no common sense

Sarath Ratnayake Saturday, 15 May 2021 01:07 PM

This shows that powers that be had no intention to vaccinate the population. Only political bragging to the gallery as usual. This is negligence of the highest order.

    Chux Saturday, 15 May 2021 01:43 PM

Unbelievable only one vaccine company been contacted till two weeks back and there wasn’t any money allocated to purchase the vaccine as no LCs were opened yet what kind of a country we live???

Like many other instances, no organised methodology in distribution scheme. Get all the refrigerated vehicles including those in private sector for vaccine delivery and storage. Use all available schools, community halls as vaccination centres. Roll out vaccinations by G.S. division. No room for favouritism, jumping the queue.

When I read the comments, it appears that there are many people who think they can run the country , they have all the answers to the problems, they think they can be very efficient but apparently not willing step out of their sofa.
