The government today decided to proceed with the islandwide travel restriction till June 7, relaxing it three days in between for people to purchase essentials, Minister Johnston Fernando said.

The decision was taken at the COVID-19 prevention task force meeting held a short while ago. The restriction will be relaxed tomorrow, May 31 and June 4 for people to leave their homes and visit their nearest stores, located within walking distance, to purchase essentials.

Vehicular movements will not be allowed during this period.  Earlier, health officials urged the government to impose a national lockdown for two weeks as an urgent measure to curb the third wave of Covid-19. (Kelum Bandara)

Why any restrictions since baby normal says that Covid has been controlled effectively few hours ago.

    Ram Monday, 24 May 2021 03:22 PM

Something is better than nothing but in my mind this will not be sufficient lockdown

    Nicolas Monday, 24 May 2021 03:29 PM

Are they thinking in their right minds when making these decisions. Without vehicle movement, how are we supposed to make our purchases. This is just nonsense.

John Gilpin Monday, 24 May 2021 03:39 PM

Blardy true with no vehicles we will have to carry bananas on our heads.

Sarath Wickramasuriya Monday, 24 May 2021 03:51 PM

fully agreed. how does /do a person (s) go to a pharmacy which is 2km far away from his/her home without using a vehicle. if many people walk in a street at the same time, does not have an impact on spreading this virus?

Sam Silva Monday, 24 May 2021 07:24 PM

If you are able person, start walking it's good for your health. Besides when we were growing up daily walked miles to everywhere.

    Joshua Monday, 24 May 2021 03:30 PM

    Ok saar

    G b Monday, 24 May 2021 03:35 PM

This will make people queue at shops and panic buy and further risk spreading virus

    Lanka Monday, 24 May 2021 03:36 PM

Welcome move. But senseless 3 days of relaxation. People will flock supermarkets, wine stores and we are going to end up with more COVID cases. The saddest part of this whole excercise is the daily wage earner.... Is there any system to assist them????? Genuinely

    Lanka Monday, 24 May 2021 03:38 PM

@nicolas they are expecting us to use the donkeys...

Closeby Kady Monday, 24 May 2021 03:44 PM

Expose in the environment without vehicles and also carry a load home walking. How many kilos does one exposed individual per family carry home? I am old I cant carry.

    Chris Monday, 24 May 2021 03:45 PM

So if your shop is 1km away and you are buying your essentials for 1 week are you to put it on your head and walk back home?

Tilak Hemal Monday, 24 May 2021 03:46 PM

Let's see if people are going to walk to their super markets (the Colombo 7 types). If my grocery store is 2 km away do they expect me to walk up and down. So according to this pie in the sky story, we will not see any vehicle other than emergency vehicles on the road. Keep dreaming.

Come on everyone, let's shout that daily paid workers will suffer. We need to turn everything into an ugly rascal.

John Stewart Monday, 24 May 2021 03:53 PM

No matter the regulation, I'm not going to have my 82 year old wife walk kms to the supermarket!!

    Simion Monday, 24 May 2021 04:57 PM

Reading these comments one can just understand the caliber of the people who are taking resonsible decisions regarding the Covid-19 spread in our country. No wonder we're in this predicament today

Karalasingam Sivalingam Monday, 24 May 2021 05:27 PM

We are elderly people, (70"s and 80's) how can we travel to groceries to purchase essentials if there is a restriction on vehicular movements? Not a wise move.

    priyantha66 Monday, 24 May 2021 05:39 PM

It took so long to make this rocket science decision after so much effort by the Medical experts.

    Sivaponniah Monday, 24 May 2021 07:10 PM

Govt should allow at least mobile sale of vegetables, fish, bread and rice. Old people cannot walk long distances to buy groceries and get back home. I am over 65 yrs. COVID Team is useless in decision making.

    Jef Monday, 24 May 2021 07:18 PM

Seriously need proper thinking before planning follow the CDC guidelines and implement procedures other countries did in difficult time get proper advice thats going to make things work well for everyone

Kumaran, Wattala Monday, 24 May 2021 07:20 PM

Wise decision though belated. Govt should have heeded to the advise of the professionals very much earlier. Govt should rethinki about not allowing vehicles. This is a thought less move.. how can the elderly walk around with kilos of provisions. At least a three wheeler is necessary.

The ministers and vVIPs excluded? They can break the law anyway! Have you given consideration to the elderly and vulnerable? You should allocate time slots for the senior citizens and vulnerable, so that they can do their shopping at a time when it’s not crowded! Also, do you expect the elderly to take a Donkey to carry their shopping! Ridiculous decision makers! Unique decision makers can only be found in Sri Lanka!

    Nimtex Monday, 24 May 2021 08:56 PM
