The Court of Appeal today ordered MP Rishad Bathiudeen to reforest the Kallaru sanctuary in Wilpattu National Park on his own expenses ruling that clearing of the sanctuary was illegal.
The court also ordered the MP to pay the cost of the petitioners. (Yoshitha Perera)

Very good punishment, he deserves it anyway.
Rukman K. Monday, 16 November 2020 12:40 PM
Reasonable decision and verdict as he committed these acts using his political power.

Freeze his assets before he hides funds
Sokrates Monday, 16 November 2020 01:08 PM
A very good judgement. But the money for the reforesting will come from the money he charged illegal from the settlers.
Sumanadisi Monday, 16 November 2020 03:25 PM
It will only be a court order. He will use his influence to get away after all. This is just a whitewash for the public eye.
Mokan Monday, 16 November 2020 03:28 PM
Let’s see whether they can rule the same thing to other powerful people also
Ding Dong Monday, 16 November 2020 04:09 PM
Super Judgement. What’s punishments for fooling people for all these days?
Dee Monday, 16 November 2020 04:11 PM
Very good! Give the same punishment to that doctor who's supposed to have made 100's of women sterile.
Gamini Fernando Monday, 16 November 2020 04:27 PM
Good judgement.
Kapila Senaratne Monday, 16 November 2020 04:59 PM
Judgment is historical but honoring the verdict is unlikely.
Niz Monday, 16 November 2020 05:39 PM
This was approved by Ali Babas Siblings so Its Ali Baba and the clan who has to be responsible.

Hari M Monday, 16 November 2020 05:49 PM
Shows what UNP did, including Sajith etc, watching the destination of forest for their political gain. Srilankan should realize the two most alternate corrupt political system we have.
U.S.N. Senanayake Monday, 16 November 2020 07:12 PM
This punishment i think not enough because some one could cut the trees even though it's illegal and as a punishment after several years pay back the money but he has earn the profit form cut trees. So with this repayment he should punish at least for 3 years jail term.
Noor Monday, 16 November 2020 07:51 PM
As country.. let's focus on country situation and development of the country instead of focusing on particular individual...

He made a fortune after selling timber,if he would not have to pay a fine, then he is lucky
Ramesh Kanth Monday, 16 November 2020 08:38 PM
Excellent judgement. This should be the president for the culprits who destroy the nature of the land.
Buddhist Monday, 16 November 2020 08:40 PM

This decision proves at least there is a little hope for the country. Why there was no valuation for the enormous amount of timber Bathurdeen and his Bosses harvested and shared. There should be charges for the replacement time, possibly for 20 to 30 years. Who will supervise or monitor the process of replanting, we all know the politicians of Sri Lanka.
Sinna Monday, 16 November 2020 10:58 PM
It seems verdict is not sufficient for the offence he had done, he encroached 2000 acres of government reserve, illegally clear it, sold timber belongs to government, colonized area against law, sparking off distrust a!omg communities, which harm national security as whole, he should get, long jail term is hefty fine and strong warning,to show politicians are not above the law
R. P. Jayatilaka Monday, 16 November 2020 11:05 PM
I wonder if this method of punishment is really good for those who are not murderers, so they indeed get a chance to correct their faults. In that case, all those who have committed minor crimes wouldn’t have been inside overcrowding the place.
Doctor Monday, 16 November 2020 11:11 PM
Dee- that doctor is a junior doctor working under the supervision of a senior consultant. It's a myth that he sterilised women. Litle knowledge is dangerous .Its a shame you believed it. However Sri Lankans can be easily fooled by such propaganda. You fell into that trap !!
shan Monday, 16 November 2020 11:36 PM
Having nearly a government with over 1.5M Public servants being paid by the citizens, what were the authorities doing? Sleeping. This is nothing but politics.
Srian de Silva Tuesday, 17 November 2020 09:54 AM
FAT HOPE!!!!
sam panditha Tuesday, 17 November 2020 10:53 PM
He was convicted of breaking a law. He should be jailed not an easy way out saying replant? Even a chap stealing bananas or coconuts, jailed. Then they should be allowed to return the stolen goods and not jailed.
