The areas, which are to be released from quarantine curfew from tomorrow, are still not safe and therefore, the risk of COVID-19 spread still prevails in the country, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said today.

Addressing the media, he said in a situation where positive cases were reported from different parts of the country, it was much pivotal to strictly follow the health guidelines.

“Lifting the curfew does not mean that people can go back to their normal routine and act as usual. People should be mindful of the fact that the risk of COVID-19 has not yet been eliminated in the country,” Dr Samaraweera said.

“The prevailing situation does not yet support people to act usually. The cases related to Peliyagoda Fish Market are still reported from different areas. Cases are also reported from several companies as well,” he added.

“Therefore, a huge responsibility lies on people in terms of adhering to health guidelines and restricting unnecessary journeys,” Dr Samaraweera said.

Dr. Samaraweera also asked senior citizens and people with chronic diseases to remain at home as much as possible. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Then why lift the curfew? This government has failed and that is it.

    Rohan Sunday, 08 November 2020 08:01 PM

Be sensible in your thinking. Curfew is lifted to create economic activity, especially to safeguard the livelihood of daily paid workers.

    Mahi Sunday, 08 November 2020 06:56 PM

What the heck are you talking, why lift the curfew?

    karthi Sunday, 08 November 2020 07:01 PM

What you say is right but people are faced with too many constraints to save our life. Our daily needs such as medicines food items and more over the financial needs to meet our daily expenses. Senior citizens are undergoing a hard time.

    Em Sunday, 08 November 2020 07:16 PM

Give half of your salary - tax payer money to the starving person next door. Every citizen of this country will agree to shutdown the country if every govt servant including the president generous enough to do so

    Dee Sunday, 08 November 2020 07:31 PM

We only follow instructions from our 'Sar'!

    Boo Monday, 09 November 2020 09:51 AM

What to do for your jealosy for ones whom you fancy are not so respected by people

    Gunther Sunday, 08 November 2020 07:33 PM

Removing restrictions despite being unsafe, funny stuff

Sam Silva Sunday, 08 November 2020 07:33 PM

Chief, Did you address the same to the officials who are lifting curfew. Also do not expect people not to move around freely. This is the reason they end up with a lock down

    Joe Sunday, 08 November 2020 08:00 PM

Clearly incapable of applying the right solution to the problem the prevailing problem. Indesisiveness at this level is unacceptable. Take responsibility and do your job competently or resign, let another try. WE NEED ACCOUNTABILITY FROM THE GOVERNMENT

    VJ Sunday, 08 November 2020 08:28 PM

Accountability? You must be kidding, they now have responsibility plus authority sans accountability.

    Samson Sunday, 08 November 2020 08:30 PM

You are correct but do you think this pandemic will be over just like that. Daily paid have to earn something to live and we seniors have enough problems with our interest incomes halved and medicine prices and food items increased. Coconut is more than 100 rs

    Joshua Sunday, 08 November 2020 08:40 PM

Government is all over on covid. Gone bonkers with their decisions

    Dr.Siri Sunday, 08 November 2020 08:42 PM

You are a qualified Epidemiologist and experimenting with the masses without much personsl experience in Covid 19 management. Human lives are more valuable than the money spent on mega projects.

    FF Sunday, 08 November 2020 09:31 PM

WHATS HAPPENING. HAVE THEY GONE INSANE????

Demuni Uduwara Sunday, 08 November 2020 10:28 PM

A tug-of-war? No coordination! 'Cir' remains morose. People suffered.

    George Sunday, 08 November 2020 10:55 PM

For all whom like to have the curfew and stay inside, why not share your food and daily needs to the people who work for daily wages. It seems you fellows ahave still not changed. Being selfish is not the solution here, people who work for daily income and the seniors citizens need their medications too. Shame on you wealthy idiots to post requesting for more holidays.

    KUM Sunday, 08 November 2020 11:52 PM

SENIOR CITIZENS TO STAY AT HOME? I am 70 , a Widower; How could I pay my utility bills; We are not used to new technology; Do not have Smartphone. If it is unsafe, why lift curfew? Very funny advice - Lifting curfew and requesting toi be indoors! Should go into the Guiness Book of Records!

    Dr.Siri Monday, 09 November 2020 12:41 AM

@ Kum .Don’t you have any relatives to help you? You are vulnerable due to your age and should be more careful and take heed to medical advice

Sachi Kuhananthan, MD Monday, 09 November 2020 04:41 AM

What do mean? The pandemic is only 10 percent over. 90 percent is yet to come and it will come.

Ammagei Puthek Monday, 09 November 2020 05:19 AM

If you are such an Einstein in the sciences, then can you prove that curfews do work to minimize Covid community transmission.

    Silva Monday, 09 November 2020 07:39 AM

We have to live with this virus for some more years maybe. To impose a curfew all the time is impossible. The decision of the government was correct. Who can afford to stay at home, let them stay at home. Many people, I would say the majority, cannot afford it and have to risk their lives otherwise they have no food. They also would like to stay safe at home like many of the people which commented negativ, but they don't have a government pension, a government salary, a private institution which pays them even they are not working or have enough savings to sit it out. Don't act selfish, we have to think first to the most vulnerable and poor people. The government anyhow will get blamed for either this or that decision, that is usual. Be fair.

    Bernard Monday, 09 November 2020 07:51 AM

The only viable course of action is to place the entire country under curfew and isolated for two weeks after giving the people time to atted to their essential needs.

    Ranjith Monday, 09 November 2020 07:58 AM

What we need is a balance view between economy and the welfare of the people. Lots of example in the world. Look at what Melbourne Premier did. Economy was running all the time but now they have got down to 0 case from 700 cases a day rate in two months ago. Ours politicians always took it for their advantage without thinking about the public. In March they said no lock-down as they did the war without closing the country. That is to hold the election in 25th of April. When MACO postponed the election they close the country full to get the election as soon as possible. Economy was fully compromised. People suffered a lot specially daily income earners. Now the election is over they try to show people that no big threat. I want to ask the politicians to think about your people before you play with this thing this way. People are not that foolish.

    dean Monday, 09 November 2020 09:23 AM

first pay every citizen allowance equal amount say 1000/ for 2 individuals. Second utility bills make it free. Third provide free accommodation to all beggars .when you lock down an area see that every citizen is tested for PCR test.last stop all salary for government employs including ministers. You will have guaranteed results within 14 days.

    Sokrates Monday, 09 November 2020 12:12 PM

The livelihood of daily paid workers must not have priority over the health of the whole population.

    raja Monday, 09 November 2020 04:56 PM

if this is not a virus, Sri Lanka would have used white vans to fight against COVD
