TN not to allow 'Eelam' conference

E-mail Print
A conference to support the rehabilitation of Sri Lanka’s Tamil population looked like running into trouble on Friday, with the Tamil Nadu government telling the Madras High Court that it can not grant permission for the event.

The Tamil Eelam Supporters Conference (TESO), sponsored by the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), is scheduled to be held at YMCA grounds in Royapettah in the city on Sunday.

State advocate-general A. Navaneethakrishnan told judges Elipe Dharma Rao and M. Venugopal on Friday that the venue will give rise to several problems as it was located in the centre of the city.

The response came as the court was hearing a public interest litigation.

Navaneethakrishnan said an application for conducting the meeting was submitted to the city police on July 29 and on Aug.8 the police had sought certain clarification from the organisers.

He pointed out that the DMK mouthpiece “Murasoli” was saying that 100,000 people will attend the event, but the venue cannot hold more than 8,000 people. But the DMK’s lawyer said the organisers had permission from the YMCA.

The central government said it has no objection to the conference. Additional solicitor-general of south India, M. Ravindran, said the Centre had not raised any objection to the participation of foreign nationals in the meet. The judges directed the city commissioner of police to consider the representation of the organisers and pass orders.

DMK chief M. Karunanidhi last week said the demand for Eelam (a separate Tamil land in Sri Lanka) will not be a topic of discussion at the conference, cooling Congress nerves as the Centre was worried about the possibility of such a demand irking Colombo. (The Gulf Today)

This conference is not for Lankan Tamil rehabilitation. This is Karunanithi;s power regaining weapon for Tamilnadu.

These jokers can't even agree with each other in their own backyard and they want to help the Tamils in SL. This 'concern' for Tamils seems to point towards a vote building exercise and nothing else.

If you think that SL tamil can handle this alone, why didn't you protest when India gave its support to SL against SL tamil?

We need an international forum to talk about these issues, Indian Central Government should mediate this, not some individual or party, Jeyalaitha should take the first step.

"Peace" is a word which come from within. I have spoken to many of my Tamil friends. They are dishearten for what is happening now. Government and their officials should start discussions with TNA. Better late than never. Otherwise, another uprising is on the card.

"Ealam" means separate state. No matter what the South Indian Tamils say they are looking for a separate place to call home. The Tamils in India have protested to keep their language as the first language in India too. In India Hindi is spoken every where , maybe not fluently , but the Tamils do not. Not a single country in this planet has ever given minorities the kind of advantages they are asking .Ex: In Malaysia,Singap ore,Africa,Carr ibean. Do not forget the Tamils are 12% of the Sri Lankan population. Let's see the US government giving the Hispanic population the priviledges the Tamils are asking. To be able to live in peace where ever you go is a skill. Tamils are causing trouble over the Sri Lankan issue after immigrating to other countries too.

Miss Aspara, do you know the history of tamils in Srilanka? Before the portugees, dutch ans british colonization, there was no united Sri lanka at all. There were only tamil and sinhala kingdoms. It was a big mistake of British that they united all the kindoms for their ease. If not, we already have a separate country.

Tamil nadu leaders have no brains and no shame. If they are helping the Tamil race than why are the Tamils running as bogus refugees, burning passports, lying and teaching their children to lie ,virtually begging for bogus refugee status. Why don't they take their own kind. Knowing that a separate is never possible. The only solution is have a heart to take their countryman back and live happily. So simple.and they never thought about it!!!!

The very fact that TESO has been resurrected and New Delhi to date has not taken any actions to dissolve it is bad enough. Now with the help of the DMK, TESO is going to have a meeting while dismissing that this meeting has anything to do with Eelam. If the Tamil Eelam Supporters Org. is going to meet what are they going to talk about? the weather and one's health?. This is one of the first steps for a 2nd attempt to divide Sri Lanka and the Rajapakse government should see this movement as a national threat which New Delhi refuses to address.
