Two police sergeants and a constable on duty at a roadblock on the Matara-Hakmana road were run over by a tipper truck. A police constable was killed.
Police said the police sergeants who were critically injured were undergoing treatment at the Matara Hospital.

Police personnel on duty in the Kirinda town had earlier signaled the tipper truck travelling from Matara to Hakmana on Monday night to stop but on failing to do so the police personnel had informed those at the next road block while giving chase to the tipper.

Police personnel on duty at the Kongala 13th post roadblock on the Matara-Hakmana road had however stopped the tipper for inspection and the driver was released after issuing a charge sheet for reckless driving.

Police said the tipper truck which had then driven towards Hakmana, had returned after about 10 minutes running over the personnel on duty.
The 36-year-old constable killed in the road tragedy was attached to the Hakmana Police and a resident of Walasmulla.

The driver of the tipper truck was arrested at Kattakaduwa after he fled the scene after the incident. The truck was also taken into the custody.
