My friend Zu at Marrs Hall

The month of January reminds us of the passing away of our Peradeniya university friend Zu as we affectionately called him. This year our batch celebrates its 50th Anniversary of entry to our sojourn at Peradeniya. When we the Peradeniya products of 1960 gather to celebrate we will certainly miss Zu who was a close friend from the time I first met him at Marrs Hall where we resided for four years.

A salute to my parents

“Two people, who see the same sun in the morning and the same moon in the night and feel closer to each other, share a bond, a vision, a love, a life together.”  I have penned many articles as a freelance journalist for over two decades and this is my maiden endeavour to pay a tribute to my much loved parents.

In memory of Prabath

We lost Prabhath in the prime of his life, depriving us of our expectations and the future prospects of his family. Prabhath being the eldest son of the Manawasinghe family, had a great responsibility and a prominent role to play after the death of his parents. He then became the chief advisor, peace-maker, and sometimes the arbitrator in the family.

St. Joseph’s Advisory Committee should resign if they have self respect

I must first congratulate St Peter’s for a convincing win this year after they were humiliated in 2008 by St. Joseph’s. I was one of the Joes who suffered silently on Saturday at the P Sara Oval genuinely watching my school getting whacked by the much superior Peterites.

'Political meddling' has come to stay

A recent Editorial in your paper on Sri Lankan Airlines refers to ‘political meddling’.

This is not new. I think the turning point was 1970. In that year Ceylon as it was then called chose to give up the British system of public service and turn to the American system of public administration.

Throwing the 'Rule Book' at voters

Eligible voters were shut out from voting at presidential election By Bernard Fernando
The recent presidential election brought into focus   two administrative requirements for voting purposes –the need to have one’s name registered in the polls register and to hold  a valid Identity card. Apparently these two requirements are imposed to prevent voting by a non-citizen and or the same person voting for a second time or more at the same election.

Dearth of bus halts: commuters trudge miles

Ever since the Galle Road was made ‘one-way’ between Bambalapitiya and Kollupitiya Junctions and the Duplication Road became a bus route, buses have halted on the Duplication Road just past the St. Anthony’s Mawatha (opposite to the Electricity Board/Public Bank Bldg).

IS THE ‘EMERGENCY’ LABEL NEEDED NOW?

The Government is now focusing on the need to re-convene Parliament in order to renew the Emergency monthly. Of course considering the massive power the Government has in overcoming any problem coming its way, it should have no difficulty in getting the required Parliamentary approval in any way it thinks fit–irrespective of whether it is fair by the people or otherwise.

God sent an angel from heaven...

You’re always there to lend a hand,And listen for a while...

There’s something reassuring,

In your warm and caring smile...

Our civics master at Richmond

The late Mr. Bandula Manawadu was our teacher at Richmond College from about 1950. Smartly dressed he had an excellent personality. To us students he was one of the best dressed teachers along with Mr. Ariyaratnam who was another smartly dressed and well turned out teacher. Both were eligible bachelors.

MILITARY SOLUTION BEFORE POLITICAL SOLUTION

Gamini Iriyagolle my friend and colleague passed away on February 3, 2003. The title of this article is the theme he presented to the public to preserve a unitary sovereign state, a strong nation, a humanitarian culture and an ancient civilization.  He abhorred violence, yet firmly believed that terrorism must be quelled for the greater good and happiness of the people.
