The tourism sector has initially proposed to bring 3,000 tourists a day, and is now in discussion with the health authorities to decide on the final number, an official said yesterday.

Tourism Ministry Secretary  S. Hettiarachchi told Daily Mirror a committee comprising representatives from both sides would meet today to discuss modalities for the accommodation of tourists.
“We hope to open the airport for tourists as early as possible and propose to bring 3,000 tourists a day. But, it has to be approved by the health experts.

We are flexible for changes in this regard based on health guidelines,” he said.
He said the committee recommendations would be put forward to the stakeholders in the industry for further views.

According to him, the industry has proposed tourism clusters covering areas such as Yala, Pasikudah and Bentota. Upon arrival, tourists are required to stay in the relevant hotel and the site.
“Any tourist is required to stay in the country for more than 14 days. Also, tourists are supposed to pay for PCR testing, visa and insurance ,” he said.
