Editorial - Subject: Tamil Eelam, banned word: Sri Lanka

Finally, DMK Chief M. Karunanidhi has woken up from his slumber and surrendered to New Delhi’s word to drop his Tamil Eelam anthem. At least that is the role he has been called upon to play by the central government despite the former’s consistent craving to declare a Tamil Eeelam in Northern Sri Lanka.

The transformation is too good to be true that, he has not only agreed to drop the subject at the recently revived Tamil Eelam Supporters’ Organisation  (TESO)  but also seconded India’s decision to extend the ban on the LTTE for another two years.
The overnight transformation is quite amazing.

Though Indian media reports that stern advice from Home Affairs Minister, Chidambaram has changed the tune of Karunanidhi’s song, the question remains as to how long the latter can hide his Tiger spots from the eyes of New Delhi. For once, the Tamil Nadu high head, who was in the habit of dictating terms to New Delhi seems to be getting a dose of his own bitter medicine.
The contradiction however does not end there.

Despite the pledge that he would remain mum about the Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka for the greater good of the two countries, the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister would continue to address the TESO conference on August 12. The game would be a tough one for him, given that he would be talking about the subject closest to his heart, without mentioning the object of his desire.
In fact New Delhi is taxed with the tougher task of seeing that the silence is maintained. Karunanidhi’s new found respect for Indo-Lanka ties should be a perpetual one that does not go for a six at the conclusion of the conference.

If Karunanidhi is attempting to realize his dreams, whichever way, it would be India’s responsibility to see that he doesn’t do it at the expense of Sri Lanka. After all, this is not an unproclaimed piece of land where anyone can place his tin soldiers and plastic flags. If India respects the sovereignty of a country as it says, it should very well live up to the statement.

The days to come will decide whether the DMK will find new bait for votes other than declaring a separatist state in Northern Sri Lanka.  However, Sri Lanka should also be mindful of the fact that, Karunanidhi’s song has a chorus and is being  sung in many parts of the world other than Tamil Nadu.
