Glorifying LTTE prohibited by law

2013-11-25 06:37:00

The government said today any attempt to promote or glorify the LTTE either directly or indirectly even under the cover of media freedom was illegal and violators would face prosecution in the courts of law.

Media Center for National Security Director General (MCNS) Lakshman Hulugalle said in the recent past there had been many attempts to promote and glorify the LTTE in some parts of the country.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement Army Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said:

The LTTE is a proscribed organization in Sri Lanka as well as in several other countries worldwide. LTTE terrorists have carried out a large number of destructive attacks against people and public institutions/facilities in Sri Lanka. Several heads of states including a President of Sri Lanka and a Prime Minister of India were among their targets. The population representing all ethnicities including Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims suffered three decades of terrorism and violent acts carried out by the LTTE which is known as one of the most ruthless terrorist organizations the world has ever seen.

Promoting and propagating separatist ideology within Sri Lanka directly or indirectly, even by using media freedom, and attempting to commemorate or glorify terrorists that belonged to a proscribed organization would be illegal.

"directly or indirectly"?? this is dangerous. now even if you talk against the budget you might be 'indirectly' glorifying the LTTE

The catch is if it is genuine or not; or are they going in the same old beaten track and trying to take the country up the garden path again. Pl no more going back to the madness of killing each other again and Gota shouldn't lower the guard.

Agreed. The word "Indirectly" could be badly misused. Not arguing against prohibiting the direct glorifying of the LTTE, but "Indirectly" is too vague. Plus, please prohibit "maha viru samaruva" which glorifies JVP butchers of 71 & 87-89.

LTTE might not be human But their parents or kith and kin are.. Its like, a criminal being killed by the government and the parents are asked not to remember him/her. Glorifying the organization should be prohibited, but as an individual every parent has a right to see the graveyard of their dead kids..And law should specify what Indirect is clearly, because its a loop hole being ,for and against

In ADDITION, the following should also be PROHIBITED by law:

    (1) Glorifying police officers who commit murders, hide inside police uniforms, and manage to avoid prosecution.
    (2) Glorifying incompetent politicians (ALL parties) who increase the cost of living while treating themselves to lives of luxury that they do not deserve.
    (3) Glorifying people who hold public office and appropriate public funds for their personal gain (ALL parties).
    (4) Glorifying people who have not achieved anything by themselves, but claim fame simply on being the offspring of someone famous! (including, but not restricted to, politicians).

People should realize that the LTTE was a murderous gang of killers and nothing more. They were responsible for the murder of more Tamil leaders than anyone other. They are akin to Hitler and Stalin. The better we remember them for what they were. Just plain Criminals.
