United National Party (UNP) seniors including Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will meet on March 4 to decide on the post of deputy leader.

Daily Mirror learns that some of the party seniors including Chairman Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Joseph Michael Perera and Amara Piyasiri Ratnayake are of the opinion that there should be only one deputy leader instead of several.

According to reports the party was planning on appointing four deputy leaders with Lakshman Kiriella, Kabir Hashim, Ravi Karunanayake and Sajith Premadasa tipped to be appointed as deputy leaders.

Mr. Wickremesinghe held the view that four deputy leaders should be selected from among those who genuinely worked for the party with one of the deputy leaders tasked to attract the Buddhist vote, which the party had lost in the recent past.

When contacted by Daily Mirror, UNP assistant leader Joseph Michael Perera confirmed that party seniors would meet on March 4. But he said he was not aware whether the matters regarding a deputy leader would be taken up at the meeting.

He said a decision on the post of deputy leader was put off as some members were against appointing several deputy leaders.

Ms. Ratnayake also confirmed she would attend the meeting where she said several key issues would be discussed. But she too stopped short of stating whether matters regarding a deputy leader would be discussed at the meeting. (YP)

SOLUTION: RW must appoint all his MPs as deputy leaders. He therefore wouldn't have to worry about the charity work, for all deputy leaders are equal to one another, and inferior to him. MR also would be happy, for all his MPs are ministers. The kingdom is split, but there's no conflict. There will be a beautiful fairy tale that will end with the phrase; they (the two kings) happily lived ever after, and the people, miserably ever after due to their genetic stupidity." via DM Android App

Actually, I was going to say that they need to first get rid of the leader and then decide on way forward.

What shame . The oldest party in the county is still trying to get their act right. How can you expect the people of this county have any trust in you or for that matter run the county when you can not run your own party.

Pathetic. DS, SIR JOHN, DUDLEY, JR and RP must be turning in their graves. If UNP cannot take a decision how are they going to take any decision IF they ever form a govt.

A true leader does not fear an efficient and hard working deputy and he also does not hesitate to delegate power and duties.

"The Immature go after false Prestige- Precedence of fellow members, Power in the Party and Praise from All. 'Listen folks, I can do this; I can do that. I am right and you are wrong' Thus their Pride and Passion increase!" Nothing worthwhile is achieved.- Verses 73 & 74 Dhammapada.
