Law entrance students complain to HRC

E-mail Print
Law entrance students said yesterday they had filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission and would take legal action against the Examinations Department’s failure to investigate the alleged leak of the 2013 law entrance test paper.

The Law Entrance Students Union said it had not received an adequate response when the union inquired from the Examinations Department whether it was carrying out an investigation on the 2013 law examination.

“We are still awaiting an impartial investigation and a re-correction of the answer scripts as promised by the Examinations Department. However they have not informed us about it yet,” Union spokesman Ramzi Bacha said.

Examinations Commissioner W.M.N.J. Pushpakumara had told the media that Sri Lanka Law College Principal W.D. Rodrigo had not requested for an investigation or a re-correction of answer scripts but was willing to comply with such a request if it was made.

However Dr. Rodrigo in a letter said he and members of the Incorporated Council of Legal Education had met Mr. Pushpakumara and other Examinations Department officials on January 4 at which the Examinations Commissioner had assured the council that the Law entrance answer scripts would be re-corrected sequent to an impartial investigation.

Dr. Rodrigo said the Examinations Commissioner had assured that an inquiry with regard to the matter would begin on January 9 and that a report on the Examination Department’s findings would be released by January 15 and the charges with regard to the examination paper leak would be addressed.

Law entrance students alleged that the law entrance results showed preference had been given to some ethnic groups over others. Students complained that Muslim students had been favoured over others who sat the examination in the Tamil medium.

Law entrance students alleged that a teacher at a private class in Wellawatte had distributed answer scripts prior to the examination and that books with the answers to the exam had also been sold. (OJ)

this article is confusing me. What is the allegation? Was the paper leaking out before exam or marks have been given incorrectly? I too have some reservation about their claims.

The allegation is that the top 78 slots have all been secured by muslims. The truth is that it has not been secured all by muslims. The allegation is false. That is why the CID has said that there is nothing to investigate.

The allegation is that the top 78 slots have all been secured by muslims. The truth is, only the top 77 slots have all been secured by muslims .Therefore the allegation is false. That is why the CID has said that there is nothing to investigate.

A famous law institution officially claims " During the last five years 90 percent of entrants to Sri Lanka Law College have studied with us and in 19 of the last 20 years, the AAAA students have been placed first in order of merit at Sri Lanka’s Law College Entrance
Examination."

were there any investigation for this? comon this time Muslim's percentage is less than 30% of total entrants. but here they r claiming 90%.

As per ma understanding there no Muslim teacher conducting law entrance class in wellawate. rather only Tamil teachers r conducting classes where Muslims and Tamils are the students!!

If the paper was leaked
1 ) why they waited till the admission is completed ?
2 ) What is the point in re correcting the answer sheet ?
3 ) If they have the answer book, why didn't they produce it to the examination Commissioner ?
78 or 77 of Muslims is nothing wrong, unless there is a proof of favoritism.
Hope all this will be cleared.
First Grade 5 scholarship, then Z score . . . . Now this . . . what a mess . . . What is Education Ministry doing ? ? ?

I know two people selected for law college. They studied in thier hometown.they didnt come to colombo for classes.they are muslims. So, how can they claim that all muslims have cheated?

And i Second the Saji about the wellawatte teacher. In wellawate there is no law entrance classes for ONLY MUSLIM students. classes are conducted for MUSLIM AND TAMIL students. AND FROM THAT INSTITUTE ONLY LESS THAN 20 STUDENTS (MIXED OF MUSLIMS AND TAMILS) GOT SELECTED FOR LAW COLLEGE AMONG THE STUDENTS ATTENDED CLASS THIS TIME. Other students who got selected are either studied in other part of county or self studied. In this situation how come ONLY MUSLIMS have cheated????

They are claiming 28 out of top 50 are muslims and they studied in
said wellawatte institute. I can confidentially tell that there won't
be any evidences to confirm all students are studied in the said
institution because as i said earlier, the two students who known to
me also in the top 50 list, there may be more students like that.

A CLEAR RACISM!!

the total of muslims and tamils entrants this time is around
50%.Eventhough if we take all those students are studied with the said
teacher in wellawatte,it is 50%. but as Saji said a institution claims
90% are their students in last 5 years. isn't a big amount we need to
consider?? Forget about the religions and races, think about the
percentage. We are arguing if the minor communities secured the 50% of
seats and telling 10% of slots are secured by muslims in top 50 from
the SAME INSTITUTION. but here they claims 90%. don't you all fell
something fishy in this 90% matter if you are feeling something fishy
in 10% matter?

A CLEAR RACISM!!

muslims and tamil ranking in high in this year law entrance, but im not suprizz coz in college, higher private education, in IT , business and bascly in every sector muslims and tamils having top ranks usually they are bit hardworker and high pressure given to them to study wel by their parents, this usually i dont see in our ethnics, parents must put pressure on students to study well and students must dont lie to their parents and dont waste their money becos they all spending to your future, so we guys have to study well and workhard,

@saji u r right, in wellawatte mostly hindu teachers are doing lecture stuffz, all those students are muslims and hindus coz itz tamil medum.

if they found guilt about paper leaking then they must punish and recorrect the papers to bring the justice

i totally agree with Lahiru. the muslim and thamil students are compelled and encouraged to study and study hard. the sinhala students know that they don't have to study but only join the party in power-invariably sinhala- and or join their goon squads.
