Be watchful about development too: MR

E-mail Print
President Mahinda Rajapaksa called on the people to be vigilant in respect of development activities as it was difficult to contain corruption and malpractice in those activities despite efforts made by the government.

Addressing a group of journalists at President’s House in Kandy on Saturday the President recalled the people’s committees that were functioning when he was a young Parliamentarian and said members of those committees were vigilant on local development activities.

He regretted that people today were not so serious and were concerned about corruption and malpractices taking place in local development activities as members of the people’s committee did in the past. (JAL Jayasinghe)

Sir, you are remembering the good old days during which period there were no corruption and malpractices unlike today. People including you and other parliamentarian s at that time were enjoyed their Democratic rights. All committees you have appointed(inclu ding COPE) to address this issue have failed. The root course for this is Executive Presidency System. You could change this by abolishing this system or by restoring the 17th amendment.

Open and visible corruption and abuse of power at highest political levels and offenders being unpunished for most glaring malpractices [ see who has been punished for contaminated fuel incidents in recent past ?] are things the government ignore. What can the general public/people committees can do where the government fail and put a blind eye ? Today people are not serious about corruption because they are helpless in a society where even the Rule of Law is corrupted.[what prevents the minister who threatened a judge and influenced JSC being arrested for investigation like a village thief.]

Mr. President, building bridges and making carpet roads are not merely developments, it is not atall developments as you get loans on higher interest rates and our Children and grand-children will have to pay-off these loans. Please don't bluff.

Are you joking MR ? What you mean about developments. First of all try to bring down the Cost of Living and make sure all the Citizens of SriLanka are fully fed first. Later we will think about the developments OK.

Mahinda only one thing you did, yes - you stopped the war, that's great. But after the war, masses are suffering and staving due to the sky rocketing prices of day to day essential foodstuffs. Is this is called the development programme of UPFA?
