Indian Court permits holding of TESO meet

E-mail Print
Bringing an eleventh hour relief to DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, the Madras High Court today permitted holding of the much-hyped pro-Eelam TESO meet called by him in Chennai, this afternoon.

At a special sitting today, a Division Bench comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and M. Venugopal stayed the order of the Chennai Police Commissioner, declining permission to the organisers to hold the meeting at YMCA grounds in Chennai

Citing security reasons, city police had yesterday refused permission, forcing DMK to change the venue to its party headquarters Anna Arivalayam, instead of YMCA grounds.

TESO had challenged the police action in the High Court, where a single judge had yesterday declined to hear its plea after which the matter was placed before a Division Bench, which held a special sitting this afternoon.

The last minute refusal of police permission had come as a blow to the DMK patriarch, who is trying to breathe life into the defunct TESO founded by him in the wake of murderous attacks on minority Tamils in Sri Lanka in the 1980s.

The Centre had also done a U-turn yesterday when it told the court that it had no objection to the word ‘Eelam’ (separate homeland) being used in the title of the meet.

The police ban came after the Centre and the Jayalalithaa Government raised certain objections in the court on Friday, particularly to use of the word 'Eelam' (separate homeland for Tamils) in the meet’s title.

The Ministry of External Affairs in its communication to TESO placed before the court, however, changed its position yesterday while asking the organisers to ensure the meet does not issue any declaration or outcome calling into question the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of any foreign country with whom India has diplomatic relations. As far as I know SL Tamils consider Indian Tamils as "second class tamils" (now, don't tell me I am wrong cos I know this as a fact). SL Tamils don't give a sh*t about Indian Tamils except for some support and money from fooled Indian Tamils. And for Indian Tamils, they take a ride on the issue for political advantage.

Dear Andy, I am saying this not because of they are Tamil too but, they are keeping this Eelam issue living/reviving thats what we want. I would also have appraised this effort even if some other community has done it for us.

@Saskia; Tamil Eelam is an old idea so does the Sinhala Deshaya. We belong to future. Hope you watched Olympic closing ceremony, particularly the song called "Imagine" (of John Lenon).

You are talking without knowing the history. Before Srilanka was formed, there were already Tamil kingdoms in north and east. Is there no library in your home town?

All communities have self determination within Provintial counsil system. That's all self determination anyone gets in SL. Just b patient until the North is ready for elections David.
There are no violations that are spesific to a race in SL.

Provinsional Council System does not work for Tamil issue. Long lasting solution should be separate state of Federal System.

I agree with you. First we were fighting for that federal system but, the SL government was not ready to give it, even today. Their long term plan is to give no political power to Tamils. So, we have changed the goal to Tamil Eelam and it will be the final goal whatever will happen.

DMK is gathering legitimacy now. Sri Lankans must need to pay attention and condemn this as loud as possible with a possible diplomatic ties and strengthening ties with China more.

Those who live in Sri Lanka are Sri Lankanans, some speak sinhala, some speak tamil, and most of them speak English as they can. Please don't create any problems.. We all have common problems to be solved.

It's time now for us to pass on this Eelam headache to the indian central government by all sri lankans giving a continuous support to karunanidhi to have a Eelam state in tamil nadu or anywhere in india.by doing this everyone will be able to see a true response from the central towards the Eelam. or even may be the end of it.

Hi All SLs,
I m from Singapore, and a Tamilian too. Being in the middle of the conflicts, i share my view with respect to all SLs and Tamils

Talking for SLs
- No Citizen wants his nation to be separated , as India also feels for Kashmir
- And the main thing is Never want a 3rd country to get interfere in their matters
- Now the war is over...it is time for development

Your r talking from the winners perspective. What about the Tamil civilians who lost their love ones and still living in misery. Are u saying that they have to forgive those who killed their love ones??. Why are we being treated differently than South Sudanese and people of Kosovo? Shouldn't we fight for justice?
