Rao in Sri Lanka this weekend

E-mail Print
Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will visit Sri Lanka this weekend in a bid to boost bilateral ties and push for an early resettlement of conflict- displaced Tamil civilians, Indian Foreign Ministry sources have said.

Rao, who will arrive in Colombo on Saturday on a three-day visit, will hold bilateral discussions with top Lankan officials and also call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama.

She is also expected to inaugurate an India-funded educational institution in Peradeniya on Sunday.

The issue of the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) is expected to figure in the discussions between Rao and the Lankan leaders, sources said.

Hope president will make use of this important meeting to the best of our country. Sri Lanka should have a very good relationship with India who is not only our neibour but also the giant of democracy in Asia. For our problems, let it be any nature,India is the first country which Sri Lanka can approach and expect solutions. Therefore,Sri Lanka should consider India as a friend indeed and a friend in need.

Madam Rao, please intervene and get General Sarath
Fonseka out of detention.. This should be your priority along with the IDP's. You have to take care of this before you leave.

Sri Lanka is one of India's lucrative markets. They will never let us develop, as it would put them in jeopardy. E.g. The 'Sethusamuthram project,' is to hit our shipping income!

Well, if SL is India's lucrative market, then they should be very interested in its development. The richer Sri Lanka is the more it will import from India.... However, India is not an export giant as China is and its economy is driven mainly by domestic demand. So this point is no very valid overall.

I wonder why Rao is coming to our beloved country? India is so worried about our President's close ties with China. Rao's visit is because of this. Rao doesn't really care about the Tamils or IDPs.

The people must understand we cannot prosper, in isolation. We need our South Asian neighbours! Do not be led astray by Wimal 'sahodaraya' and others who will say one thing today, and something else tomorrow.
