Former MP Sri Ranga and five others were granted bail yesterday by the Vavuniya Magistrate’s Court after they were produced before court, over an accident that killed a policeman in Settikulam in 2011, police said.
The accident killed Mr. Ranga’s bodyguard who was a police sergeant attached to the MPs security detail. Initially it was believed that the deceased policeman had been driving the vehicle. However following a complaint lodged by the policeman’s wife with the police headquarters, further investigations were carried out by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) which revealed that Mr. Ranga was driving the vehicle at the time, they said.
Attorney General Dappula de Livera had instructed Police SIU Director to arrest Mr. Ranga and the group of people involved and produce them in court.
Moreover, four police officers including two retired officers who withheld information from the initial investigations, surrendered to the police yesterday. Mr. Ranga, the four police officers, and another individual were produced before the court yesterday and were granted bail, police said.
