The government is reported to have re-introduced another wartime measure such as the setting up of security committees at district levels in the aftermath of the series of bombings that killed 321 people and wounded some 500.
Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardane said these committees would be set up in keeping with the instructions given by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to all district secretariats.
The committees will be required to meet every Sunday and will comprise representatives of the security forces, the police, religious leaders and people’s representatives.
They will provide security to the places of religious worship and tourist hotels.
A similar mechanism existed during the war to ensure the safety and the security of the people at the time the LTTE bombed civilian targets.
