Surrendered Superintendent of the Negombo Prison Anuruddha Sampayo, who was taken into the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody was ordered to be remanded till today by Negombo Acting Magistrate K.G. Gunadasa.
Sampayo, who had been absconding arrest for over a week, surrendered to the Police in Kurunegala on August 2 afternoon. On July 22, under the directions of the Attorney General’s Department, CID obtained arrest warrants on Sampayo and three other officials of the Negombo Prison from the Negombo Magistrate.
The Courts issued arrest warrants on Sampayo, when he was found to have arranged a couple of top drug suspects kept at the Negombo Prison with unwarranted ‘luxury’ like facilities in their prison cells.
Accordingly, arrest warrants had been issued on the interdicted SP Anuruddha Sampayo, Chief Jailors Sarath Bandara, Nishantha Senaratne and Jailor Kalinga Kaluggala.
Negombo Prisons Jailor Kalinga Kaluaggala surrendered to the CID on July 25 and was subsequently remanded. Other two Chief Jailors Sarath Bandara and Nishantha Senaratne also surrendered to the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on July 29, and they were also ordered to be remanded by the Negombo Magistrate’s Court.
Prison Superintendent Sampayo had also filed a writ petition at the Court of Appeal, seeking an injunction preventing him from being arrested by the CID.
