Major General (Retired) Sumedha Perera who was appointed as Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development assumed duties today at the ministry amidst the religious ceremony. Pix by Pradeep Dilrukshana

    Why do people have to hold ceremonies for taking over of duties? Isn't it something personal and official? Few years ago it was only the ministers who held such ceremonies. But now, ministry secretaries and department heads have started. Can't we stop these useless things even at a time like this?

    I hope new secretary Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli, Agriculture, We hope that Irrigation and Rural Development, will develop Mahaweli water development up to Northern province also. Northern farmers will fulfil this country's vegetable and rice supply.
