The Special Waterborne Operations Squadron comprising 16 officers of the Special Task Force of Police (STF) was established yesterday in order to thwart illegal sand mining, deforestation, smuggling and other crimes across the country.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said 16 officers of the STF were trained by the experts under the sponsorship of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Sri Lanka Powerboat Association.
The squadron was unveiled yesterday in the Bolgoda Lake with the participation of Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera. ( DSB)
