Two suspects including a police officer were arrested with 164.3kg of Kerala cannabis during a search conducted at a roadblock at Ilupawadawei, Mannar, the Navy said.
They said a suspicious luxury jeep had attempted to escape - contradicting the Navy order to stop at the roadblock. However, the Navy stopped the vehicle by warning fire and by searching the vehicle they recovered 164.3kg of KG which was packed in a few sacks.
The driver of the jeep is identified as a resident of Kaluwankerni and the police officer, attached to the Madagama Police Station was identified as a resident of Monaragala. The suspects, the stock of KG and the jeep were handed over to Mannar police for further investigation.
