Clarifying on a fear prevailing in society that the Coronavirus could be transmitted via food imported from foreign countries, Chief Epidemiologist of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr Sudath Samaraweera said there was no risk of the virus spreading via imported food items.
“One gets infected with the virus only when it enters the respiratory system,” Dr Samaraweera said speaking to media.
“The virus spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth,” he said. “However, the virus remains on a surface or object only for three days.
“Hence, there is less possibility of the virus entering the respiratory system when consuming food.”
“However, he said that there were few instances where the virus was found have been transmitted via food,” he said.
Therefore, he asked people not to have unnecessary fear when consuming food imported from foreign countries. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Sir, With All Due Respect To The Position You Hold As The Lead Epidemiologist, Let Me Say Categorically “ You Are Not A Scientist But A Medical Doctor “. Recently When A Similar Question Was Asked To A Biologist Teaching At The World Famous Harvard University, His Reply Was “ We Don’t Know “.

Why don't you also mention that Covid 19 can NOT be transmitted by burying victims. To force people to cremate their loved ones is a crime against humanity.

Dear Doctor Please be aware you Are a doctor and not a scientist who research into viral infection. So do not you think you should Not make sweeping statements of your own. In one instant you say there are some instances transmission has taken place via food. Again you say the virus cannot be transmitted through food. Will you please explain which is the correct position.
