Church has no issue with cremating Catholics who succumb to COVID-19, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Colombo said yesterday.

Head of the social relations unit of the archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Jude Chrishantha told Daily Mirror the Catholic church had allowed cremation since 1960s.

“However, there is a special prayer that needs to be recited when cremating a dead body. There is also a prayer when burying ashes of a cremated body. Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has already instructed Catholics in the archdiocese to abide by the government’s instructions on COVID-19 prevention,” he said.

Recently, UNPer Oshala Herath filed a fundamental rights petition against the cremation of Catholics who succumb to COVID-19. (Yohan Perera)

It is sad to hear about UNPer Oshala Herath, heard for the first time. Are these the people who wants to be our "Future Legislators". God Save Sri Lanka. How were thousands of those dead bodies were at the start disposed by the Italian Army without no rites at all. Country where Holy Pope lives. Be practical man and listen to Cardinal.

Absolutely right. The Almighty only see the merits accumilated by the decease during his life on earth. Almighty is not concerned whether the deceased was washed and cleaned burial to burial or cremation. Prayers for the deceased is only a mitigation factor. In a time of Pandemic why are people creating much adore over nothing? If the GOSL of the view all deceased from Corona need to be cremated, it is for a reason and people irrespective of any religious or ethnic back ground must adhere. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE AN ISSUE.

Who is this Oshala Herath charcter, for God's sake ? If the Catholic church says no problem to cremate a dead Catholic/Christian, so what. Please dig this man's roots and see if there is a Muslim connection.

When the whole nation has to stand as one and all faiths have had to accomodate the urgent needs of the health guidelines given at that time . All faiths were affected and no sooner we are able to get back to normalcy the state will revert back to the original position.
