While saying that the support from the Health Ministry officials was not adequate in the endeavour to contain the Covid-19, Public Health Inspectors Union said there is an attempt to pass the blame on PHIs whenever there is a shortcoming with regard to Covid-19 related matter.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, Union Secretary M. Balasooriya said it was really unfair to pass the buck all the time on PHIs when it comes to Covid-19 related matters.

“As far as the Covid-19 situation in the Colombo city is concerned, several areas in the city are at very high-risk. Against this backdrop, there are a lot of things to be done especially for the people living in isolated areas,” he pointed out.

“We have observed that the support of the government officers attached to the Health Ministry is not satisfactory and adequate when tackling the Covid situation in the Colombo city. Entire responsibility is on the shoulders of the PHIs and security officers,” Balasooriya said.

“There are officers at the Ministry, who were recently recruited for the same duty of the PHIs. However, we don’t see them in the field,” he highlighted.

In addition, Balasooriya said the authorities had not taken any step to relieve the stress of the people living in isolated areas in Colombo and also authorities have failed to provide sufficient food items to the people as well.

“We also expect the support of the officers attached to respective Divisional Secretariats for the purpose of containing the virus. It should also be noted that there are government officers who do support us for this purpose but we are not getting the overall support," he underlined.

“We need everybody’s support to contain the virus. We are not accusing anybody but it is not fair to depend on the PHIs and security officials alone; then, it becomes impossible to contain the virus in the country,” Balasooriya added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Passing the buck is the only thing this government has been doing . They were elected with a thumping majority as the people rejected the previous regime but these guys have proved to be an utter disaster and already those who voted are regretting

We must salute and appreciate PHIs for their diehard policy though the rulers did not heed to their advice even though they asked to lock down, as they knew the ground situation, very well. Because, the country must run, as his usual brave statement.

First and foremost we appreciate the services rendered by all the health sector personal to control the 1st wave of Covid 19 pandemic in Srilanka Now the 2rd wave of the Covid 19 pandemic in on and it is a different ballgame altogether. This situation has to be conveyed to the general public and has to be handled by adopting a different strategy. There is no time to pass the buck to different sectors in the Srilanka health sector. Work as a team to overcome the 2rd wave of the pandemic. Remember if we are United we can overcome the problems but if we are divided in fighting this unknown enemy all what you have achieved will fall apart. Think out of the box with a positive frame of mind. Get out of the compartmentalised frame of mind and have a positive attitude to move forward .

As respective bodies to carry out specific tasks individually or collectively, all of you are responsible for the mess we are in along with the ignorant and irresponsible section of the population from top down. Get out of the blame culture and work together to get it under control.

99% PHIs contributed to control 1st wave and 1% Drs contributed to the same. But, government appreciated entire Dr population and listen to what Drs ask. This was why 2nd wave has got worst.

Mobilize those so called doctors in the Government Medical Officers Trade Union on to the field. All they do is gather the latest tidbits from other sources and make a big show of it through the news media an newspapers. bunch of hypocrites.

Already election is over and 20th Amendment passed. No need to worry about the Public and most of the isolated areas in Western Province are filled by minorities.

The national task force not enough there needs to be a lower level multi disciplinary task force for each of the isolated /risky areas appointed having a coordinated mechanism for taking necessary action Ie 1-seeing to needy of people -food , medicine , cash, Livelihoods, and to needs of people in relation to mental health other health needs, 2)Controlling spread -monitoring self isolated people, identifying sick and contact Tracing ,controlling movements , checking on adherence to Quarantine health rules etc A team with Medical And health Personnel, PHIs, security personnel- police /army, Divisional secretariats/pradeshiya sabha . Local community committee/ volunteers, grama niladari etc

The PHIs should understand....The Govt officers were busy in getting the 20A amendment passed, arranging LPL, presenting a budget, releasing politicians from cases, some having weddings during lockdown etc. Hence, they did not have any time no?

PHI don't worry too much. People will ultimately blame nobody, just the President and Government as if they have no other jobs to do? Just cooperate and do your best. That's all. no body will die except for the will of God.

The government has other priorities such as acquiring properties. The people have to fend for themselves. Thanks to the health inspectors, they are doing well with limited resources.
