Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday said that the government’s move to increase the size of the Cabinet through a parliamentary resolution was unlawful.
Addressing the regular weekly press conference, its Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris said that the government had decided to increase the size of the Cabinet to 48 and the number of deputy and non- Cabinet ministers to 45.
He said it would be permissible in the case of a national government to be formed by the largest party in Parliament, with other parties. In this instance, he said the government was only trying to reach an agreement with individual members of another party, which was unacceptable.
Besides, he said there was a sudden discussion about provincial council elections, which was an attempt to distract public attention from the presidential elections. (Kelum Bandara)
