The Government has decided to suspend or limit the importation of non-essential goods except pharmaceutical products and fuel, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Ramesh Pathirana said.

The Minister expressed this during the media briefing held this morning to announce Cabinet decisions.

“This decision was taken to make sure that the local agriculture sector is strengthened and to start up well-established industries in the near future,” the Minister added.

Who determines whether an item is essential or not? Is it the cabinet of ministers or the user/consumer?

He does not know how to boom economy during the recession. Does the limit on import help oppress the infection? It is totally irrational, dictatorship.

Well established industries to produce non essential goods is confusing.

Now you can see how capable of this regime. They are taking us back to 1970- 77 era. They took the govt with him of promises and unfit to run even for few months.

Lifting foreign exchange controls .....and suspending the non essential good's import. That self explains the predicament.

Andrew Silva Thursday, 02 April 2020 05:26 PM

What a silly and stupid idea. One kind could be a non essential item for one person but the same item could be a very essential to another person. This idea must be a leaf out of Hitlers manual.

For the next 5 years our country is going to face severe financial difficulties. Commodity prices will increase due to exchange rates. Our government will not be in a position to control this. Only borrowing from donars will keep us moving. This is the time we have to make reconciliation with our minority and make them to contribute for the success of our nation. This is not the time to talk racism.

If anyone who criticizes every good step taken by the Govt. to cope with the situation like this, they must suggest or come with practical ideas to restore the economy.

Local industries won't successful . if imports continue, imports make custom officers and politicians super rich, by talking bribes or commissions or by both
