The government decided to make fresh engagement with President Maithripala Sirisena seeking his approval to increase the size of the Cabinet exceeding 30, it is learnt.
The leaders of the political parties, aligned with the government, met on Tuesday evening and discussed this matter.
The UNP, as the main party of the government, believes that the President has softened his stand, and therefore it will be possible to secure his consent.
Earlier, the UNP worked out a motion to be presented to Parliament asking for approval to increase the Cabinet size on the basis that it has already formed a national government. The Cabinet size can be increased exceeding 30 only in respect of a national government only.
According to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, the national government is a government formed between the party with the highest number of seats in Parliament with another party. (Kelum Bandara)

What a shame. Here is a comparison; In the United Kingdom, the Cabinet consists of 22 people and UK is 4 times larger that Sri Lanka.

This is one reason why the public must not support for a UNP Presidency. Government must work within 30 Ministers now and forever. Jumbo cabinet is enough.

The poor UNP with no proper leadership. The next will be to invite Gamarala as a common candidate for the next presidential elections. Aiyo Ranil, all you want is to be in power, either in the government or opposition. Time to send this man and the party he leads to the political septic pit. May pollute the pit.

More public funds wasted.

A malicious and reprehensible attempt to give more uneducated and greedy MPs unnecessary portfolios to bribe them politically and all this at the expense of a largely poor population.
