Galle Face protesters vow to continue until Ranil resigns from presidency

The protesters at the Galle Face Green today said that they will continue with their protest until the newly-elected president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, resigns.

Addressing the media, they said the new president must resign immediately.

"A large number of people were gathered demanding the removal of Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the first key demand. Our second key demand is that Ranil Wickremesinghe should resign," they said.

"Now Mr. Wickremesinghe was elected as the president today." But we know how people came to the streets to continue this struggle against the Rajapaksa regime and Ranil Wickremesinghe. We understand that the parliament today took a decision against the people's will. People in the country wanted an adjusted, democratic system. "We know Mr. Wickremesinghe was brought by the Rajapaksa regime to cover their total system," the protesters said.

Therefore, as protesters engaged in a genuine struggle and as a non-violent protest movement, we want to say that a peaceful protest will go on against the current president and against the current system, they said.

Therefore, the people are concerned that Mr. Wickremesinghe should resign, the protesters added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Remember if GR appointing RW as PM was wrong, then today it was a totally new legal process from which RW got selected. So now it must be respected for the sake of the country. Ranil was selected thru usual constitutional formality practising a pre set expensive process. IMF or other big countries won't question undemocracy as long as this selection comply with their ordres. People cannot trust this selection and their planning anymore when the whole bunch who are mainly responsible for bankruptcy still hang on to cover all thefts and illegal acts.

They should respect the democratic framework. Country does not have enough funds to conduct an election. Stability is required. IMF help is required. Tourism needs to be improves. No country can continue with Aragala everyday. However, general election needs to be conducted as early as possible.

Every struggle by the people begins by the people saying enough is enough. The aragalaya started in the same vein. It has succeeded by educating the masses to the real dangers of dynastic politics. Having Ranil as president who has already publicly stated that he wants to work with MR will only pave the way for the clan to remain in politics in Sri Lanka without accountability. This cannot be right. The people's struggle would have been in vain. Do not give up for the sake of the next generation.
