Foreign Medics without SLMC registration practising at SL Army: Nalinda

JVP MP Nalinda Jayatissa today revealed that some doctors who had graduated from foreign universities were practising at the Sri Lankan Army without being registered under the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

He told parliament that it was illegal for any doctor to practice without the SLMC registration.

"The doctors can obtain the membership of the SLMC only after undergoing an internship. Doctors graduating from foreign universities should pass the Act16 exam to get eligibility to undergo an internship. Some graduates from foreign universities are practising as doctors for the army without SLMC registration," he said.

He said the reason given by the army for the situation was that graduates from Sri Lankan universities were not applying for vacancies in the army as doctors and added that the government should formulate a mechanism to overcome the situation instead of recruiting unregistered doctors from foreign universities. Sena Friday, 12 July 2019 01:26 AM

This is a statement that could help Sri Lankan people. This should check whether the Army get treatment from quacks/bogus doctors. In other countries army receives the treatment from best doctors at state of the art army hospitals.

Very true. These fools only helps in toppling governments.

Mr JVP man, the problem is none of you have science or maths degrees to understand that the work the doctors do can be easily done by any common man with just a few months of training. Prescribing drugs made by Scientists is not an intellectual activity, and if you consider operations it is a craft , just like a butcher or a mechanic and you could learn it by practice.

    Ram Friday, 12 July 2019 04:28 AM

Foreign Graduates to get registration must sit Act 16 exam that is coached by the Rogue Doctors who are the office bearers of GMOA.

    Ram Friday, 12 July 2019 04:30 AM

Politicians go overseas for treatment but the doctors who treat them have no right to practice medicine in Sri Lanka. Where is the balance?

Andrew Silva Friday, 12 July 2019 06:20 AM

It appears there is no law in the country .

    Aj Friday, 12 July 2019 07:06 AM

U guys do not want anything any way, only want the country to go on strike. What seriously does your political party intrested in doing .

    gamini Friday, 12 July 2019 08:39 AM

and you politicos will be the first guys to run off to Singapore for medical treatment when you are ill. Do the doctors in Singapore have SLMC certification??????

Lord Wolfstein Friday, 12 July 2019 10:40 AM

The army knows why they do not take doctors registered with the SLMC.

"Prescribing drugs made by Scientists is not an intellectual activity" further to this comment by "EW" - With the numerous tests available and with reference to the code on drugs publication, prescribing the drug of choice is a simple procedure.
