Five dogs at a house in Kaldemulla in Moratuwa, that had been starving for more than a week had killed and eaten one of them.
The police raided the house on information from the Society to Protect the Rights of Animals and the Environment, to find three dogs, two pregnant bitches of the breed of American pit bull and the partly eaten carcass of another.
Police said the owner had been away from home for more than a week regardless of the suffering of the poor animals and that they had fed on the flesh of one.
The suspect businessman was produced before Moratuwa Additional Magistrate Nuwan Kaushalya on the charge of cruelty to animals and released on personal bail in Rs.100,000 each with two sureties and the dogs released to him on a bond of Rs.1.5 million. The Magistrate ordered the Police to find the cause of death of the dog and to see that the owner properly cared for the five dogs and provided them food.
A police team under HQI Mount Lavinia Police Dileep C. Perera had carried out the raid on the instructions of SSP Kamal Pushpakumara. (Reka Tharangani Fonseka)

Why people in Sri Lanka want to have pure breed dogs as their pets ? Is the dog used as a distraction to cover up your ugly face and wrong doings ?

I know a woman who keeps a dog in the cage forever and tie it on the leg of her bed at night so that it cannot run away. That dog had never been allowed to be free at least to walk out and about. Whom I should inform this to?

Yasintha, inform Police immediately. Mount Lavinia should have sentenced the suspect businessman imprisonment for animal cruelty.

Pitbull terriers are used by some people for illegal dog fights. They are aggressive and good fighters. They become violent because of owner's abuse and neglect. This is a perfect example of such a scenario. Many countries have banned owning a Pitbull Terrier.
