Sri Lanka is still not secure in terms of Covid-19 due to individuals arriving from foreign countries and thus the risk of the virus spreading still prevails in the country, Chief Epidemiologist Dr Sudath Samaraweera warned.
He told the Daily Mirror that there was a risk of Covid-19 spreading from illegal migrants arriving from India via sea route.
Against this backdrop, he claimed that people had taken health guidelines for granted and added if they continued to do so, they would have to face the consequences.
“Persons subjected to the quarantine process or medical care can mistakenly associate themselves with the society. In such a situation, if people had not followed necessary health practices, the whole society would be at stake. Hence, there is a possibility of leaking any positive case into society resulting in a high-risk situation,” Dr. Samaraweera said.
Moreover, he said the vaccines that has been discovered are still under testing and none of them are yet fit to be used.
Meanwhile, the Epidemiology Unit said the toll of Covid-19 recoveries in Sri Lanka yesterday rose to 3,233 with three more recovered patients being discharged from hospitals.
It said a total of 134 patients are still under medical care at hospitals while the total confirmed cases stand at 3,380. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
