The Transport Ministry had forewarned that there would be a possibility of more than 3, 000 individuals getting killed due to road accidents within this year, Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
He said while strengthening the transport service in the country there is a possibility of reducing the road accidents.
"The Ministry had predicted the statistics after evaluating the deaths and road accidents in the past year," the Minister said.
The Majority of the deaths were of young individuals with increased productivity who can contribute to the development of this country.
According to the available reports of the Ministry, more than Rs.100 billion rupees had to be spent to treat the road traffic victims annually during the past years.
Therefore, it is relevant to develop the transportation system in the country to reduce road accidents, the Minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

- Lane Discipline for All motorist a MUST. especially Motor Cycles. - Three Wheelers must be allocated stopping zones. No ad-hoc stopping - criss-crossing main roads - U-turns etc. - U-Turns on all main roads should be stopped.. - Bus Lane rule to apply to all busses - if there is no allocated bus lane busses should still drive on the left. if another bus is stopped the following bus should still keep behind as there is no room for busses to do 45 deg. maneuvers on main roads. - New riders on scooters are riding like they're sick of life.. it is advisable and safe for such riders to keep left under any circumstances. motor cycles "creeping' in between vehicles traversing diagonally across vehicles stopped at traffic lights should be stopped for their own safety. - ALL vehicles should observe Line

Compulsory driving lessons for a prolonged period should be the punishment for traffic offenders. Withhold licence.
